I finally broke down and bought a new paper trimmer. I've been looking for the right combination of sturdy, accurate, and cost effective for quite a while. The Making Memories 12" x 12" Precision Trimmer really delivers. Here are the main things features.
~It is self sharpening, so never needs a replacement blade.
~It doesn't lift open leaving the blade exposed, so no cut fingers.
~It has 1/2" grid across the whole cutter, making measuring more accurate.
~The grid also contains pre-measured templates for 4" x 6", 5" x 7", 8" x 10" and 8.5" x 11".
~It will cut a hair width accurately.
~It is a reasonable price, retailing for $49.99 US, and I used a coupon.
~It's sturdy and folds down making it portable. and easy to use on smaller projects.
~Magnetic ruler for scoring and holding paper in place while cutting
~Features a non slip grip while folded and unfolded.
I think it's a great cutter for the money, and I'm happy I purchased it. I haven't found any down-side to this product. I've used it to cut paper, cardstock, felt, and chipboard. It did them all with ease. If you are tired of spending money on replacement blades and cutting mats, this might be a good investment.
Have you played with this trimmer yet? What did you think? Let us know in your comments below!

You will not regret it. I have owned quite a few trimmers and this one is my absolute FAVORITE!!! I LOVE the fact that that it is self sharpening and It cuts wonderfully! I am so glad I bought this trimmer and haven't used my others since. TFS!!! -Samantha
I have this trimmer, it is great.
One question how do you score with this tool? I always pull out my old fiskars to score. This would be great if you can score with the making memories one.
thanks

PERFECT TIMING Tami!! I have been shopping around for a new cutter..mine is a Carl 15" rotary trimmer that I've owned for about 2 1/2 yrs...I truly think that it has NEVER really done such a great job. I have two other small cutters, however, my concern is I am so used to something larger than 12 X 12...not that I use any paper larger than that very often..Thanks so much for the info!!

I have this and also bought it with a coupon! I LOVE it and have even cut smaller pieces without opening it the entire way. Sure you need to be careful not to lean on it otherwise it may lean over and possibly mess up your paper, but definitely worth it.
I will say that the magnetic ruler it came with came apart shortly after I bought it. Sure you can easily stick it back together but it's still loose. I don't use the ruler all that often though so that's okay!
my opinion is the same - have owned several (!!!) cutters and love this one the best. scoring....didn't think of that - usually use my fiskars for that, but since I don't do too much scoring, it isn't a big deal.
I just score with a bone folder on the crack.
I would wholeheartedly agree with the many accolades for this trimmer.
However, I have owned mine for several months, and the blade is VERY dull. I'm very disappointed since it is "self sharpening." That was one of the reasons I bought it.
It's basically useless to me now. Its cuts the paper so rough it's unuseable.
Thanks for the feedback on my review. I am concerned about the negative feedback on this product. If you find it is dull or that the magnet does not work, please contact making memories for a replacement. Here is the link: http://www.makingmemories.com/about/rma.cfm
I sent my own request in about your concerns, and will post back when I hear from Making Memories.

I love mine!!
Thanks for the review! I've been eyeing that trimmer, but I'm still in love with my 10+ year old Fiskars!

The only thing that I miss from my other trimmer that this one lacks is the ability to change blades to do the scoring and perferating lines for me...but other than that I love this trimmer and am love it!!!
I thought this would be the last trimmer I would buy and used it alot since I got it last christmas..but guess what to my dismay the numbers and lines have rubbed off.
I also think it's getting dull as someone else mentioned. It is pretty useless in it's current condition. I got only about 5 months solid use from it.

I wanted to ammend my comment. When I said my cutter's lines were wearing off on this post the company contacted me. I was sent a brand new cutter because they said it was something they had become aware of. I appreciate a company of this caliber. Obviously they have fixed the problem.
This is the best cutter I have ever had and I would buy from this company again.

I bought this cutter but am planning to return it. I am frustrated that the lip that guides the paper doesn't go all the way to the edge, past the blade. I often find my cuts to be crooked, even when I line up the paper with the lines. After reading a couple of the posts about the blade dulling that helps me decide to return it. I was hoping to see a paper cutter comparison on Craft Critique and only found a couple reviews of cutters. It is such an important tool but so hard to find the perfect one.
I love a lot of things about this trimmer & the blade lives up to its promise of being self-sharpening.
However, like Tsiniki, my ruler was also already apart when I bought it & like Trish my lines have worn off. I've contacted the company, but I haven't heard back (may be because I'm not sure how to find the item #.) I'd recommend it fully, but suggest that you be sure to keep your receipt handy in case your lines wear off too. :0)
Guess who just got a new precision trimmer in the mail? Moi. :0) GRIN! I've never received such excellent customer service. And it has a nice glossy coating so the lines won't rub off. Ahhhhhhh bliss. :0)
I'm thinking of buying it but I was told you couldn't see where you are cutting and have to go off measurements not sight. Is that true? I have a carl one now and the plastic strip under the blade wares away and you need to replace it. Does this one do that?
I have been looking on the internet to find a site like this to see if other people have experienced problems. I bought this trimmer yesterday, was so excited to try it but the blade does not make a clen cut at all, and it is brand new!
I have this cutter & luv it!!! I've had it now for 10 months & the blade is self sharpening. Maybe you need to call the company to voice your complaints. I do have to say that I am one happy customer & I would buy this product again & any other product that they offer that I can use. I think (even though I haven't had any issues) as some have stated that this company stands by their product & makes their customers happy & thats a big plus in my book!
I just bought this cutter. I had been eyeing it for a while. While I am not unhappy... I am not sure I am happy with it either. The blade doesn't glide as smoothly as I thought it would. Plus it gets stuck at the top if I push the blade up there to get the paper out. Not sure if it just the person doing it though.... haha! Anyone else having these issues or is it just me?

I bought the trimmer a couple of months ago and just used it twice and was quite happy with the blade. However, this weekend I decided to do a couple of projects with the trimmer and noticed two things that made me actually angry with it since it ruined my one project: the plastic trimmer edges are not in alignment and so all the pages end up skewed and I can't see how to measure when scoring (I'd like to use the centre). I'm sorry if I'm not too clear on the issues but I'm sure if you have one, you know what I mean.
I have had my cutter also for several months and have really enjoyed it until I started to experience the same problems as some of the others. The lines have worn off and the blade is so dull that my cutter is collecting dust on the corner of my table. I've had to go back to my 1986 cutter that has been stored in the closet. - Marie
Arg! I am so frustrated with this trimmer! I just bought it last March (8 months ago) and have only used it on six days so far. Up until now, fabulous, lovely cuts, then tonight, right in the middle of my weekend crop, it is suddenly getting stuck as it slides down the bar. I clean it out but this doesn't help and eventually remove the blade and arm to discover that the large metal bar that the blade rubs up against is actually a touch warped. The blade has now rubbed into it and has tiny imperfections now. Suffice it to say the trimmer won't cut worth a darn now! It looks like there was too much adhesive used to affix the bar to the plastic in one area, and because the bar is glued on, I imagine a repair would be impossible.
I am very disappointed, and now stuck without a decent cutter right in the middle of my big weekend away. I have requested replacement at the mm site, but won't hold my breath.
Make sure you really examine any unit you purchase for flaws in construction, as you do not want this to happen to you! Go to the extra trouble and take the arm apart, to look underneath. You wouldn't be able to see this problem unless you do.
I have had this trimmer for two years. Markings have worn off in places AND the self-sharpening blade is getting dull! It is now leaving a slightly rough edge to every third or fourth sheet I cut. Loved it at first, not happy now!
Liked the sturdiness of the cutter when I bought it but after two years the blade is now dull and leaves a rough edge to every third or fourth cut, and I always only cut a single sheet at a time. The markings are also wearing off in places. Not happy!
The minute I discovered this trimmer, I knew I had to have it. Since I am short of workspace I thought that the ability to halve its size would be a winner, along with self sharpening blade, and grids.
But woe and behold!
I was so disappointed that the grids didn't line up accurately and I could never cut true right-angles.
Then, the track that the blade runs in became warbled - which gave me a curved cut every time.
Also, like a couple of other comments, my ruler began to fall apart.
I had paid full price for this trimmer, and I'm so very disappointed in it.
The line-up of the grids should have been inspected / proven on production and this would have been avoided. After all, what good is it without accuracy of this function?
I am also disappointed! Spent over A$100 for it! I have had it a few years and it is just crappy! never worked properly from the start! :(
I end up using my A$20 trimmer. So sad to have such a nice looking cutter sitting collecting dust! I emailed MM back when I got it and all I got back was a email telling me what I already knew! I can get a few cuts one way with out fluffy edges but not the other way! than I have to sharpen it and start again. All I am cutting is single sheets of paper and not even cardstock! Would be nice to have a cutter that works for the dollars I spent!
Dont buy!! Have gone through 3 within 1 day. First one would not slide cutter on rail. Returned to store. Second one only cut half way down then creased paper. Returned again to store. Third on is missing parts and the table ios bubbled, pitted and peeling paint. This goes back tomorrow for refund and I will find another.. Poorly made trimmer for money they want.
I´m not happy with the M.M. paper trimmer. It dont make a sharp cut. The paper is frayed at the edge and look as if it is sanded. It was a birthday gift, bought in the USA, so can´t just return it :-( Mona
