My printer is moving… from my office to my craft room that is! As a teacher, my printer is an indispensable tool that I use daily. I never considered that it was also an indispensable crafting tool…until now. I just got a new Kodak Easy Share 5300 All-In-One printer and I am seeing printing in a whole new light.

To be honest with you, I was a bit skeptical about reviewing this printer. After all, I had plunked down LOTS of money on a very large and very good laser printer. I had experience with ink jet printers in the past and was just never satisfied by their spotty performance. But I figured it was maybe time to give the advancing technology of ink jet printers another shot.

Here’s what the Kodak Easy Share 5300 is all about…just the facts!

• ink jet printer, copier, and scanner
• includes a 3-inch, high-resolution color screen to easily see and crop photos for printing.
• prints directly from most memory cards
• uses a convenient 2 cartridge, 6 ink system
• web site tips, tutorials and customer support
• print head is actually a permanent part of the printer, not the ink cartridge (a good thing)
• pigment based inks instead of dye inks (longer lasting)
• inks dry instantly (no smudging or smearing)
• approx. 1’6” long, 1’3” wide, and 9” tall
• retails for $199.99

While I don’t love everything about this new printer, there are many things that I am really thrilled with. I spent the last three weeks playing, printing, scanning, working, and creating…with this printer right there by my side. I don’t often have much use for a copier, but it sure has been nice to be able to make duplicates of important tax information or extra copies of travel schedules. It was quick and easy to make copies…if you can push a button, you can copy.

Now scanning is something that I am a bit ambivalent about. I like the ease of scanning (and this scanner is no different…just lay the item down and hit a button), but I just don’t like the “lighting” for scanned pictures. I found that scanning documents and text turned out beautifully with the Kodak All-In-One, but scanning my cards or scrapbook pages left me feeling a bit blah. Many times scanners “overexpose” photos and cards and the Kodak All-In-One was the same. But I guess that’s what a good photo editing program is for… right?

For me, the printer portion of this tool sealed the deal! Remember, it had to stand up to the quality of my trusty (albeit expensive) laser printer. And what do I think? I think I have a laser printer to sell! I put the printer through its paces…printing off tons of handouts and lesson plans and assignments. While I am thrilled with the speed of the printing, and the crisp black of the text prints I get, I am not quite as excited about the quality of colored text prints. I’m not talking photos (that’s later)… I mean regular PDF or text files with color in them. The prints are okay…probably even good, but they are not the bright and sharp color I am used to. I did notice a better quality of color when I used the suggested Kodak Ultimate Paper, but with the amount of printing I do, I am a “buy it in bulk” kind of gal and the cost for that much premium paper is a bit high. For most of my printing, the quality is perfectly fine; I know I can step it up a bit with the Kodak Ultimate paper for special projects such as resumes or invites.

8.5x11 prints...just look at the vivid color and sharp detail!

What really hooked me was the photo printing capabilities. As a crafter, I take TONS of digital photos. I never really printed many though due to the quality of the prints and the cost of the inks. The Kodak All-In-One has changed all that for me. I always wanted to decorate my home with prints of my photographs and now I can. I am AMAZED at the quality of the prints I made. I used the Kodak Premium Photo paper and did a little test. I printed out the same print on my laser printer and again on the Kodak printer…and I am a Kodak lover! I am just thrilled that I can print professional looking photos quickly and easily…and for a fraction of the cost I was paying before. The crafter in me can think of hundreds of projects I want to explore using my new scanner/copier/printer. Just take a peek at some of the cool things I’ve done with my photos!

A clipboard recording our time in Washington. I hope to have each state represented!

Some canvas that I altered and added photos to...opted for the black and white...wonderful tones!

I love my new printer… but I am here to give you my honest experiences…so here is a list of the good, the bad, and the in-between.

Cool
• Looks good. Streamlined and modern.
• I can plug in my memory stick and print right from there. No computer necessary!
• The layout and operation of the control buttons makes for easy use.
• Store both 8.5 x 11 and 4 x 6 paper at the same time. (Two trays)
• Smooth movement and operation of key elements
• Paper tray image for correct paper placement.
• Calibration procedure uses the scanner for quick and error free calibration.
• Green indicator light on power cord eliminates crawling under the desk to check power supply.
• Quiet and quick
• Ink cartridges are less expensive and easy to change.

Not So Cool
• The included software didn’t work with OSX 10.4 (But it was easily available to download free)
• The calibration procedure uses 4 x 6 paper instead of 8.5 x 11 (Photo paper instead of regular paper. More expensive paper, but less ink – so this cancels itself out I guess.)
• To get the very best quality of printing (both photos and text) Premium Kodak paper is suggested.

As you can see…I am more than happy with my new printer and can live with the few “not so cool” things. Now I just have to clear out a space in my studio… for my favorite new “indispensable” crafting tool.

Stay tuned for two more reviews and helpful tips from our reporters... and good luck with the giveaway! Be sure to tell your friends!

Oooh! I would LOVE to win this baby! My daughter's wedding is coming up in the Spring, and I told her I didn't need a "parent's album" because I could create my own. This would be ideal for that -- she gets all the photographer's hi-res photos on a DVD.

I would use this printer in my classroom. I have a really inexpensive all in one right now, but it prints horrible pics. I use pictures all of the time in my classroom and this would save me a ton of time!!!

There is so much that I would love to do with this printer! I would alter my pictures the way I want them, print them out and carry them straight to my craft room to play some more! PLEASE enter me! I have been eyballing this printer for quite a while but have been afraid to take the leap!

What a great giveaway... I bake and cook a lot and scrapbook and I would love to be able to easily scan recipes from magazines and be able to make my own cookbooks with pictures of my own recipes and food. This would be a great gadget to have in the kitchen/office area for such a thing.

Enter me! I'd love a way to print a sheet of color business cards without having to worry about them smudging or running if they got wet. Color copying is SOOO expensive and I really don't need 200 cards at once, so this might be the answer. Plus I'd love to consolidate my scanner and printer!

I am my son's class room mom. Every year, I make magnets with all the kids pictures on it at the beginning of the year. It helps everyone, especially me ;), learn all the kid's names. I make the magnets for all the kids. They seem to love it too! Thanks for the opportunity.

I have almost 12 week old twins. My husband, Connor, Chloe and I just returned home from a six day trip visiting each of our families, including a great-grandma on each side of our family. Of course, we took tons of pictures. This printer would have been fantastic to have during the visit to use with my Kodak C613 camera. Imagine being able to print out pictures during the visit, placing them into an album and handing the wonderful memory of the visit to those we had visited.......but, instead, I need to download pictures on my computer, upload the images to a photo printing website, order, edit and wait for the prints (either by mail or to pick up)....you see where this is going, don't you?

This seems like it would definately be an asset to our household. We do lots of printing and it would be so nice to be able to print off some of those digital pictures that I have taken with my Kodak DX7630.

We have a Lexmark Printer at home and that has just about had it. Makes strange sounds.

Seeing this is a Kodak printer I would say that it would definately be a real asset to anyone who receives it.

Please enter me in the draw for this awesome printer.

Wow! What a cool printer. I've been wanting to print out full size photos and make calendars for Christmas gifts. This printer would give me the quality needed to print out photos! With the scanner you could also create collages from your photos and you could send kids home with a photo from parties you throw. Instant gratification! (fingers crossed, please oh please let me win!!!)

Wow!! A brand new printer?? I don't even OWN one!! Any time I need to print something, I have to email it to my husband and get him to print it!! And to be able to print pics?? Unreal!! I scrapped 3 calendars for Christmas gifts last year but didn't have time to make one for myself....sigh. But if I had an awesome printer, I could do that and so much more without having to run out to Walmart to print pics all the time!! Thanks for the chance to win!!!

Does this look like one sexy printer OR WHAT. First of all - it would become the primary printer and I would give my HP to my brother and his kiddies because they are in desperate need of one!

IF I had this printer this is what I would do with it. Since I am new to the world of scrapping I can see so many uses - printing photos, scanning boxes of old pictures (I am like the family historian!), printing in various shapes and sizes for my layout journalling. I also like to scan in magazine articles to store for myself to read later.

THanks so much for this opportunity! Nan

My art work relies heavily on image transfers so I am always on the lookout for hardware to make the process more effective and more efficient.

In addition to using a printer almost daily for my own art, I also teach two-day workshops devoted to creating original textiles that can be used for image transfers - a good printer is a necessary tool for me to have at the workshops.

I love to spread the word to my readers about great tools and equipment, so please enter me in your giveaway!

Oh man! I'd love to win this! I travel to Honduras every February to lead a Bible school for about 200 Honduran children. Last year, we took their pictures and hung up full sheet pix of the kids on the bar covered openings in the cinder block school. No glass windows to be found here. Anyhow, I'd love to be able to print out 4 x 6 pix for each of the children there because, believe it or not, THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY LOOK LIKE! Can you imagine that? When we took tiny pix of them last year, they could not pick themselves out. Sooooooooo, that's my story. Thanks for the opportunity. Blessings, Leslie

Here is a great idea of what you can do with the printer. Print 3 identical pictures onto a transparency, then put a different colored piece of cardstock behind each picture, you can use this either on a layout, a canvas or in frames, and you will have an Andy Warhol type of look.
I no longer have a printer so this would be awesome. I run a daycare from my home, and take alot of pictures of the kiddies, but it's inconvenient to go out to get them deceloped.
Hope my tip was useful
Thanks Trace

Wow, printing pictures from home would be a dream! I'm such a quality snob and I *love* everything Kodak! Plus, anything to keep me from dragging my 3 kids to the photo store and spending an hour just selecting the photos that I want printed all the while my kids tearing the shop apart (oh, please don't let me re-live that, LOL!)

I'm a big scrapbooker so I can just imagine taking pictures, printing them out and being able to scrap them the very day they were taken! (Or on those late nights when the kids & hubby are in bed, I could sneak into my craft room and scrap away!) And that would mean that grandma and grandpa would actually get to see pictures of their grandchildren because it would be so easy to print them out.

Oh, please pick me!! :o)

Well I love Kodak already as my camera and long loved lil picture printer are Kodak. I have the Kodak Easy Share C743 and my picture printer was the Kodak Easy Share Printer Dock Series 3. I say was because well I used my printer almost everday as I love taking pictures of my babies and I love that I was able to just print my pictures right away when I wanted BUT two weeks ago I was printing and my 4 yr.old spilled his chocolate milk and it went into my printer :( Though I tried saving it.. IT IS NO MORE :( Kodak has been the reason I have really got into scrapbooking more because I don't have to wait to send pictures to print and lose my mojo in order to scrap, I can start setting up my pages while I get my pictures. I have done many quick lil gifts for family because of it.(frames, mini albums, cards) I love Kodak and when I get enough pennies together( I'm a SAHM and budget is my middle name) this actually would be the perfect printer for me as it has so many other wonderful features I could use. So I throw my name into the bowl if you please and thank you for the chance to win such a wonderful gift.

This looks like a totally awesome product! I haven't even entered the world of scanning in LOs because our scanner is not that easy to use...I'd rather take a pic of what I've done and use that, and we don't have a photo quality printer either, so I have had to order and wait for all of my pics. Or, how about a thank you card for your kids birthday presents to all the relatives. You could print out a photo of them opening up the present given to them and then add your own thank you sentiment.

I would love to have this in my craft
room. With having everything you need all in one tool, it saves from trying to find a place that does all this for you, then a parking place, etc etc :=) All in one is the way to go. I also do my pictures through a mail service and this will make it so much easier to have my pictures right when I need them. Scanning and copying would help me with my crafts I like to donate to our church. Thanks for letting me enter to win this wonderful product.

I'm sure he'd be happy if I won one. LOL!

So, all we have to do is leave a comment? Really? Sounds great to me.

I like the idea of long lasting dyes and the ability to print in smaller sizes. Would love to have a printer that can actually print IN COLOR again. LOL!

I would use it to print off pictures of cards/altered items that I have made and mail them to my mom so she can see them. I'd just e-mail them to her, but her computer won't accept attachments. Hmmm.... let's start with pictures. I like to scrap on the fly, so having the ability to print my pictures when I want them would be a dream come true. Right now, by the time I get the pictures back, my creativity has flown the coop.

Then there's the possibility of going digital/hybrid scrappin'. Something that I haven't gotten into yet because I don't have a printer that's capable of doing what I want/need it to.

I don't even have the foggiest idea what else to do with an all in one, but I'm willing to find out and be the test guinea pig
