I have never been the person in my household to make decisions about printers... my husband is a self proclaimed "geek" and that is typically his department... and as every geek worth his or her salt knows, Kodak is not the first name you think of when you think of printers. Cameras yes... but not printers.

Which brings me to the Kodak EasyShare 5300. What intrigued me most about this all-in-one printer was the Kodak name. Our last printer was an HP officejet 6110 all-in-one. A decent printer... but the cartridges were running us $40-50 a pop! And the photos were only so-so... nothing I was ever thrilled with. Like many of you, we were in the market for something new.

What first impressed me with the Kodak EasyShare 5300 was the marketed ink cartridge price. $9.95 for black and white and $14.99 for color. The "why" behind this is the way the printer has been designed... on my old printer the ink cartridges contained a "printer head"... the little piece of the cartridge with the plastic cover you have to peel off, but on the Kodak EasyShare the printer head is actually a permanent part of the printer. You install it separately and calibrate it like you would a new ink cartridge. This never needs replacing... thus the savings in ink cartridge production.

I should mention that the calibration was sort of confusing. It required a great deal of trouble shooting to get the printer head installed... but the web-site's troubleshooting FAQ's contained the information we needed to get it working properly. But I was glad I had an "in-house technical consultant". Oh... and to just amend Colleen's article... you CAN use 8 1/2 X 11" paper to do the calibration (she said it was a "con" that you needed the 4X6" paper to do this task). It will prompt you to use the 4X6... but you can still use the 8 1/2 X 11" paper. I would imagine however that the quality of paper makes a difference in the calibration process (which involves scanning a printed page). I took note in my initial tests of the printer that paper quality is imperative to it's performance.

So let's talk paper... Kodak recommends that you use their papers... and the best of their papers of course. I was given a sample of Kodak's "Ultimate Paper" (a standard bright printing paper... not a photo paper) for my tests. In the picture below you will see the difference... now if you set the print quality to "best" and use the Kodak Ultimate Paper you will get a vivid, color rich image. But if you set the quality to "fast draft" and use a standard copy paper you will get a very inferior image. Of course the BEST image is on the right.

When using even the "best" setting on standard copy paper the image is significantly diminished. But when using the "best" setting and the Ultimate paper, even a color copy of a printed image (same setting and same paper) is an almost exact match (see below). So my suggestion is to use a standard cheap paper for everyday stuff... but buy a ream of the Ultimate Paper for those times that quality is imperative.

One test I tried without success was printing on vellum... every time I tried the printer announced there was a jam. Then the paper could come out undamaged... It was as if the printer didn't "see" the thin translucent paper. I will be contacting Kodak to trouble shoot the problem... so check back for an edit when I get an answer.

Clear labels, Stampin' Up! colored paper and Whisper White papers all tested with great success. A change from my last printer that had a jam every time I tried to print on colored SU! papers, or any thicker cardstock.

Now as for photos... I would be using Kodak paper regardless... you want your photos to last and to be their best. what is really amazing is that this printer has a dual tray... 4X6" and 8 1/2 X 11". The trays also store paper so there is no need to switch back and forth... just push the 4X6" paper tray slot into position when you need that feature. Also of note; this is borderless printing! Your photos really look like they came from your local photo lab. The quality is awesome!

Another really cool thing... something that always bugged me a LOT on my HP was that whenever a picture had white in it the white part always looked odd... but this printer features a clear glaze that gets put on in the white areas... so there is no difference in the texture or glare of the picture.

And the copier... well it's great... in color or black and white, it looks wonderful. Here is a copy of a little bag of Candy Corn... wouldn't that make a cool background paper on a Halloween card? Keeping the candy in a bag kept my scanner bed clean, and the quality looks just like a photograph!

Let's talk about the scanner...

I scanned in this image of my Grandmother, her baby brother and her mother (who died when she was a child). This is one of the few photos that exist of my Great Grandmother, so it's very precious to my family. How wonderful it is to be able to scan the damaged picture, fix it in Photoshop, and make quality photos for my other family members.

The final prints turned out wonderful! One tip... the original image was very thin and brittle, so when I first attempted to scan the image it came out very orange. I placed a piece of cardstock behind the image on the scanner bed and the problem was corrected.

Some random nifty ideas...

As we've mentioned before, his printer has a 4 x 6" printer tray. How easy will it be to print sentiments at the bottom of a card front now! I can print the 4 X 6" size, and just lop 3/4" off the top to get a 4 X 5 1/4" card to mount on a 4 1/4 X 5 1/2" card! So easy!

I always heard you could print on Twill Tape with some printers... well... it's true, and it's easy! Just print the phrase you want on thin cardstock. Make sure you print the phrase in Landscape (horizontal, not vertical) format. Run a line of double sided tape style adhesive (I used Mono) down the phrase and cover it with a piece of twill. Now run it through the printer again! Voila!

I really have very little to say that is negative. In my experience it runs quieter and faster than my past printer and works great! White the initial calibration was a bit of a trial, Kodak was terrific with technical support. Their website was all we needed to troubleshoot. I guess the biggest con for me is the noticeable difference in print quality (compared to my HP) when I printed test pages on standard (cheap) copy paper in the "normal" setting. But the other features, and the amazing photo quality really outweigh the negatives for me. My tests with "best" quality printing selected and the Kodak Ultimate paper or Kodak photo paper were pretty darn great.

All the basic stats on the printer can be found HERE. One other amendment to our past reviews (as told to me by my handsome in-house Geek Squad)... you can print up to 8 1/2 X 14" paper (Melissa said 8 1/2 X 11") . I know a lot of you have asked questions in the comments I have tried to answer them in my article... but with all the contest entries we're bound to have missed some. So feel free to email Kodak; contact info HERE. They have a wonderful customer service dept.

The Kodak EasyShare 5300 All-in-One Printer is availible for purchase wherever printers are sold. Or at the Kodak website HERE.

Thanks for the thorough review. Just got back from a vacation out West and in one of the gift shops they had pictures on a wood cube that you could turn many different ways. I think you can buy blank wood cubes and it would be great to put our vacation pics on it

Wow Sarah - way to put the printer through it's paces!! What a thorough review and article! I loved the way you can print on twill and that the cartridges are so affordable! I would really like a photo printer so I could print on tissue paper and do transfers.

Very cool! I would love to be able to print on twill and make my own paper! Not to mention the ability to print pictures and actually "fix" some of the old family pictures that have seen better days! Sounds like the options are endless!

Printing on ribbon is a great idea! I also like to make my own business cards rather than buy them ready-made.

I just love, love, love the Kodak products!!! I have an easy share camera as well as the ES printer 500. It is so great to be able to print my pics at home, but would be FAB! to try printing larger sizes!!

WOW........good for Kodak. They seem to have covered all the bases with this one. It does not print on 12 x 12 BUT........there is a way to accomplish this. I have read it somewhere......I will have to "google" I guess.
Like I said.....possibilities are endless for scrapbooking as well as card making.
I love restoring old pictures. I think this far outdoes my scanner and printer that I use now. And this is an all in one. How much better can it get?
I could give this machine a lovely home.........*wink*

Wow! What a great printer! I have an Epson Photomate now & I hate it (always have)- it always comes up with an error and I waste about 5 sheets of expensive photo paper for every 1 decent picture I get out of it! Not to mention the frustration of it all! I'd love to be able to throw that puppy out! If I had a great printer I'd love to be able to make a class project for my son's awesome 2nd grade teacher this year- maybe a photo cube or tote (love that one on the Kodak site)- she would love it!

I've been searching for an all in one printer, and I think I have just found it! I especially love the price of the ink refills!! I have 2 boys in school, and between reports and misc. printing, they do a great job using my ink. I am a new Stampin' Up! demo, and I print a lot of materials for myself and my customers. I would love to be able to share even more when it comes to photos and images added to my blog. This all in one printer would do the trick!

I would love to try digital scrapbooking but love the idea of having something tangible to look at and share w/ family and friends, esp over the holidays! So this printer would be perfect! I love the fact that it's all in one as well. That means more room for other goodies!

Sarah,, I'm really impressed by the fact that this machine does all that you have showed us.

The way it made the older photo look New again is super wonderful. Dh & I have some of the older photo's that our printer will not print out as nicely as this one did.

Maybe it's time for a Machine.
Thanks so much for taking the time to share each of the great qualities of this Machine.

You always do such a good job on reviews.

I agree with scrappymom19 - the more I read, the more intrigued I become. I've always considered HP to be the "cadillac" of printers, but the different in photo quality between the Kodak and HP printers indicated tells another story.

I'm also impressed with the fact that you can switch back and forth between 4x6 and 8.5x11 paper at the touch of a button.

The ability to print on twill ribbon is also very neat.

The high-quality scanning would be perfect for those researching and documenting family histories.

I'd absolutely love a chance to win such a versatile product. If customer service comes up with a way to print on vellum without a hitch, that will be key, as well.

Great review, I'd really love one.
I would take photos and then print them and make them into card fronts. You could take pictures of your kids playing with a toy that was a gift and send a thank you card with that photo on it. So many different cards could be make with it. How fun!

Wow, this sounds like a great printer! Our current HP inkjet printer has served us well for the past 10 1/2 years, but it would be nice to actually print photos, and use all the other features of the Kodak EasyShare 5300. Thanks for offering the giveaway.

When I read the first review of the
Kodak 5300 printer, it sounded good but after this review, I can see its many possibilities. I would love to be able to print out on the 4" x 6" size without having to remove the larger size of paper. And to be able to scan old family pictures and print out multiple copies with great quality would be definite plus. Thanks to Kodak for providing this great give-away.

I sooooo hope you pick me! I have not had a printer since last year just before Christmas and have had to borrow my daughter's. I kept hoping I'd get an all-in-one for my birthday, or mother's day, but I'm still waiting! I have 4 children K-8th grade and a printer, scanner, photo-printer is a MUST!

I am also a paper crafter, scrapbooker and like to do personalized gifts which being without a printer has all but come to a screeching halt. What good is a digital camera if you can't use it for art? I have hundreds of pictures just waiting to be printed!

I also Love the fact that the ink cartridges don't cost more than the printer!

I've got my fingers crossed!

Thank you for the awesome review!!! I definitely want one now! My Epson printer drives me crazy with printing my B&W photos in a lovely shade of green! And it takes FOREVER to scan pictures! I also like the idea of being able to print on twill because I can never seem to find the right saying on store boughten tapes and I don't always have the best of luck when trying to stamp on them.

This is a wonderful review! Thank you for sharing it! I would love to use this machine to scan all those old pictures I have that need renovating. Looks like the scanner is a lot better at doing that than mine right now. I would also love to make my own photo prints. I'm really not happy with what I have right now. This one looks perfect!

Thank you for a thorough and enlightening review. Made me want to run out and buy one for myself. My in-laws have boxes and boxes of family photos that are starting to show their age. It would be wonderful to go through and scan them and be able to restore them to their original look. I plan on having them share the stories behind their photos and scrapbook them so that the entire family can enjoy them.

It must be kismit! My printer has given up on me this week and I've been looking at the Kodak 5300. I used my printer and scanner for everything. As a scrapbooker, I need top quality and I think the 5300 is exactly what I need. I love making my paper craft projects, pages, and cards with lots of dimension. Just think of the possiblities if I can manipulate my scanning projects and print them onto twill, etc. Thanks for such a thorough review Sarah!!!

I just love all the great ideas you have been sharing, I love the printing on twill. The quality of printing photos seems to be very nice quality as well, something I am frustrated with my own printer. I have a ton of old photos that from my husbands Grandmother who was in England during WW2, i would like to make copies of them myself and have them be very clear. Then I could make some fantastic picture collages and scrapbooks with the copies. Thanks for the chance at winning a printer, so generous.

I definitely need this printer... I'm using commercial retail outlet for "good digital" pictures since our home printer is the pits! Thanks for the review. Makes me see what I'm missing!

Thanks for the very informative reviews. I love the fact that the ink cartridges are so reasonable and that they are long lasting pigment ink. The other feature that intrigues me is that you can keep both 8 1/2 x 11 and 4x6 paper on the printer.
I would love to scan 3D items to use as backgrounds for cards and scrapbooking and for printing on twill and ribbon.
