Reported by Melissa NorrisFor this article, I think I'm going to start off by letting you know my background with printers. The last time I personally purchased a printer was in 2000 and I was about to go to college. I, of course, bought one of those all in one, back to school, computer packages that included a printer. And that printer was a piece of junk. It would take like 10 minutes to print my reports, which wasn't a good thing when class started in 10 minutes. And when I bought my first replacement ink cartridge for way too much money after way too short a time, I decided I was swearing off printers for good.
Shortly after that I was working at the campus copy center, so I had no need for a printer. I had access to like 12 of them. And at that point in time I was still using film cameras so I sure didn't need to worry about printing pictures.
Then I got married. My husband had a Lexmark laser printer. This baby was nice, it would just shoot those pages out. But wait! Where's the color? Wonderful, it only prints in black and white. I'm now forced to color things in with markers if I want them in color. Very classy.
So this brings me to now...I have a printer that prints color! At least thanks to the Kodak EasyShare 5300, I do. Colleen gave you the 411 about what this printer can do yesterday. And unfortunately, I can't really make a comparison to my existing printer, because of the black and white thing. So I'm going to compare just the photo printing aspects of this printer to my HP Photosmart 325 that my mother-in-law gave me for Christmas, and I use occasionally to print my digital photos when I have an urge to scrapbook.
Ok the physical differences are going to be easy. The HP is tiny and the Kodak isn't. The HP will only print on 4"x6" paper (it can print 2 photos to a page, but that's the max paper size) and the Kodak can print on any size photo paper up to 8.5"x11". The LCD display on the HP is about 1"x2" and the display on the Kodak is 3" and pops up for easier viewing. They both will take USB devices (flash drives, camera cords, etc) as well as various types of memory cards. They can also both hook up to your computer for printing.
So next I decided to put them to the test. I printed 2 photos on each using the Kodak glossy photo paper provided with the printer. I printed one in black & white and one in color.
It's a bit hard to tell in the photo, but the black and white Kodak photo looks a lot brighter and a bit crisper. I believe the reason for this is that the Kodak has a black ink cartridge where the HP just has a tri-color one. That's a lot of layers of ink for a black and white photo.
Overall, I like how the Kodak prints photos. I will definitely keep the HP around to take with me when traveling, and I have a friend that wants to borrow it to use at kid's birthday parties she hosts, since it's small enough to travel and pretty quick. But I think for quality photos that I will be framing, using in my scrapbooks, and giving away to others, I will definitely be using the Kodak from now on.
Here are some other likes I had about the Kodak EasyShare 5300 printer:
- First, don't forget to reset your printer settings on your computer. I was trying to print some flyers and they weren't coming out. Duh! They were still going to my Lexmark.
- There was very little packing material in the box. Which, as a green consumer, I liked.
- Everything was taped down and secure, so I didn't have to worry much about things getting damaged in transit.
- Everything was included to get you started, software, ink cartridges, and sample packs of standard and photo paper.
- The photo paper can always be stored in the photo paper holder, it just has to be pushed in to be active. And the paper holder is just under that so you don't have to worry about loading paper every time you want to print.
- The display folds up so you don't have to get up out of your chair to check your settings, look at photos on your memory card, etc.
- Pull out extender keeps papers from falling on floor when printing, but goes away so you don't bump into it when not in use.
- There were instructions printed right on the first flap of the box to let you know how to safely remove the printer from the box. Then the next thing you see when opening is the getting started guide, which has all the info you need for setting the printer up.
And some dislikes:
- Much larger than my old printer and shakes my filing cabinet when it's printing something. Most likely, will be easily remedied if I had an actual sturdy table to put it on.
- Had some trouble installing the printhead but that only needs to be done once, so once you get it, it's not a problem.
- Noisy compared to my old printer, but nothing unreasonable.
- The color flyer I printed wasn't of superior quality, but as I said, I didn't have color before so I'm not really complaining.
Overall, I am really liking this printer. The pros definitely outweigh the cons. I will probably keep my other printers around (at least until my next garage sale) in case I have a large amount of black and white items I need to print, and at least to use up the rest of the ink in my HP, I don't want to let that go to waste. I think for people who are in the market for a new all in one style printer, you can't go wrong with this one, it prints well, scans well, and looks great while doing it!
The Kodak EasyShare 5300 All-in-One Printer is availible for purchase wherever printers are sold. Or at the Kodak website HERE.

Ooh! I just thought of something I could do for my daughter's wedding! I could make the table number thingies with the background being a semi-transparent photo of the two of them. That would be so cool!

Great review! I think even just being able to accurately print color swatches will be an invaluable asset...something it sounds like this printer can do!

I'm boring I would use it for...printing pictures to send to my family. It looks like it would do a fantastic job and being 1700 miles away from my family it would get used lots!

This all-in-one would be so wonderful for my scraproom. I can finally print out all my pictures immediately and share them with friends and family. With two young daughters, it would be great to print pix for grandmas & grandpas and send them off to them by mail, since they don't use the computer. And making personalized cards for parties and birthdays... So many ideas!! Thanks for the giveaway!
I really think this is something that would go great with my sons Christmas gifts! THANKS for the information here!

1)I know what I would do with the Kodak paper----print out photos onto fabric paper and sew them onto a memory quilt!!! I can't believe the difference with printing between the Kodak and HP! Phenominal results! Thanks for sharing!!
2)Print out pictures, use a circle punch to cut them out, adhere them to some background paper, add a small hole punch at the top and finish with some ribbon---walla a cute ornament!

Great review ... I do not like the photo printing on my printer. I would love to be able to print smaller pics at home!
I would love to print phots of this quality at home for my scrapbooks. I think I would be more likely to make Grandma albums more.

This would be perfect for when you have just a few pictures to print. This past weekend I needed just a few staff photos to include in a collage - this would have saved me uploading them and picking them up at a photolab.
Because I scrapbook in 8 1/2 x 11, I'd personally use it for digi-scrapping.... Digi-design bookmarks for Christmas gifts...
Print colour tags for our annual Christmas gifts that the church makes available at our Christmas Eve service...
The possibilities are endless.
Oh how I'd love this printer. I would like to learn to digiscrap. I also take hundreds of pictures of my daughter. I get them all printed through Koday but sometimes I need an extra copy of a print and having this printer would be perfect. I'm not sure how to rig this drawing but I'd sure love to win!!!
wow. thanks for sharing your results between hp and kodak!
wow, a Kodak printer. It has to be awesome, who else would you want to print your pictures? I would love to be able to print pictures out when I am ready to use them, in the sizes I would like to use. Count me in.

I would love to be able to print my photos onto transparencies, ironon transfer paper and various other mediums. This sounds like an AMAZING machine!!!
I would love to be able to print excellent pictures whenever I need them for whatever project I am working on. Awesome printer with a great review.
Thanks for the review. I am in the market for a digital camera and printer. I am hoping Santa brings me one. I love to make cards and scrapbook, I am tired of getting my film developed! I would love to be able to get better pictures quicker!
Thanks for the reviews. I am hoping Santa brings a new camera my way. I love to scrapbook, and film is not the most convenient!
Oh my that sure is a big difference in printer quality there!
I would love to have a photo printer with more acurate color. Too many times, my monitor shows great colors and crisp images only to hit "print" and receive subpar prints.
Kodak-PLEASE PICK ME as the winner of your printer give away!
Thanks! Great review. I print lots of pictures for scrapbooking projects and make photo Christmas ornaments every year.
This sounds like the upgrade I've been looking for.
What I would love to do is photo tags for all the kids for xmas gifts this year. Also was thinking when we have our Christmas party for work to make place cards for seating arrangements for dinner...And also to make gift tags for the owner.
How exciting!! I would love a printer that I could print my photos with at home!! I would get so much scrapbooking done if I could print my own pictures!!
Thanks for the wonderful review. With an awesome printer like this, I could get started scrapbooking my 4 children! Thanks for sharing your information!
Oh how awesome!!! I would use it for printing my pictures for scrapbooking. I would also print digital images and papers as well for hybrid scrapbooking. You could use it to make hybrid cards and gifts. The list could go on and on! This would be so awesome!
The best photo quality comes from printers that are made by companies that make cameras!!
I think it would work great to create your own backgrounds using 3-d items. You can place a photo (that you printed on the printer) on the scanner then you can put items around it(like m&ms, rocks, feathers, macaroni, whatever)that have to do with the photo and then just scan it and print it. Instant altered photo!!
I would love to print my own vintage images, rather than having to buy collage sheets. Accurate colors would be so wonderful!
Fabulous review.I do not like the photo printing on my printer. I would love to be able to print smaller pictures at home with ease!
thanks for the great review. being able to print pictures for my holiday cards would be awesome!
I would love to be able to print quality pictures at home to use in the scrapbooks I am making for my kids. I love that I can give them something to treasure for years to come. The pictures printed off my computer are just not worthy of putting in a scrapbook. The colors are off and just don't look as sharp as your examples. Thanks for giving us the chance to win one!

Thanks for the great review! I've been looking into different printers and this definitely helps narrow down what I want!
A great idea for a printer is to scan and print your cards (or print the photos)..it is a great way to remember your card ideas so you can then give away the actual card!

And since I hit post too soon... I'd love to be able to use it for printing out dance and hockey photos for family like the sports cards on the Kodak site. My son saw those and thought they were "so cool!"
Thanks for the great info!

I would love to print wallet photos out for my friends and relatives and would LOVE to win one of these! Thanks for the chance to win!
I would use it to print all the pictures my husband and I take and use the scanner for uploading them to my family up north. The scanner would be useful also because my Husband enjoy creating stamp designs so he scans a lot of things to turn into sketches for stamps I one day may be able to manufacture. I could really use this
What an amazing product! I can't believe all the things that one printer can do. I need to get me one of those!!
I would be able to print and share photos on the spot with my youth group and their parents during special activities, like our fall fest.
Looks great i have a digital camera thats a kodak
Ooh! Ooh! Pick me! Pick me! lol I would love a total digital camera system that is truly user friendly. I've heard great things about the Kodak Easy Share. I even bought one for my mom-in-law, but not sure if she's used it...hey, if I get this printer, I'll tell her she can re-gift it to me for Christmas! ha ha

very impressed with the color quality, esp. compared to the HP. and i love the idea of using the photo transfer paper - could do some wonderful little journal quilts with photos!

I would love to get into digital scrapbooking, but alas my current printer is too pathetic! Cool giveaway!

I'm in the market for a new photo printer...this would be awfully nice. :)
OMGoodness....I would probably just do plain printing of photos. Not very imaginative but very useful.
Thank you for the review. I think it would be a great printer to use in crafting. I often use photo's in my cardmaking and need to be able to print different sized photo's. This would be great.
Amazing giveaway! It is my dream to have one of these! I scrapbook and it would be wonderful to be able to print photos whenever I want. I would love to see a comparison of the Kodak and an Epson.
I think printing photos and connecting them trapeze style to each other with something cute like ribbon would be fabulous! It could hang from branches on a table or on the wall....
Although a new camera and photoprinter are out of the question this holiday season, I would definately appreciate one that would capture the true colour of the biggest Christmas gift I expect - the arrival of baby number 2, due on December 26th. I'm sure my poor daughter was not *quite* as pink as she looks in her scrapbook, LOL!
This would make a great addition to scrapbooking.
I would use it for printing pictures. I currently have an HP photo printer and I don't feel the quality of printing is there, as seen in the review.
I have a Kodak Z885 camera that I recently purchased and LOVE it. I've read that the best print results occur when your camera and printer are from the same manufacturer. The EasyShare 5300 would be a perfect complement to my camera.

Wow! I would love to try the CD jewel case wall display concept in my home! I have hundreds of digital images on my computer that I don't currently print off because of the poor quality of my printer, but with the Kodak easyshare I would have a lot of fun changing the photos in the CD display every month or even every other week!

I would love to try this. I had an older Kodak easy share camera, so have tons of photos on my puter. I also use photos to decorate tiles and candles.
My daughter is having a birthday party soon and I would love to take pictures during the party, print them out (with the Kodak printer...of course) while everyone is eating cake and ice cream, then send copies of the pictures home with everyone!!! That would be so fun...I would love that!!!

It's always great to read consumer information on different products and get the real story.
There is always a need for printing pictures at home, also to be able to print off the background papers that different websites have available for crafting, card making, scrapbooking, etc. What a wonderful addition to the office & craft room... Cool!
Shelley Flaherty

I would love to be able to print my pictures out just minutes after I capture them. This Kodak printer would be an asset to anyone's home. I would have A LOT of FUN with this!!!
I would use the printer for printing my own patterned paper...and pictures too, of course!
Thanks! Karen U
I would love to be able to use this printer with iron on transfer paper so I could make holiday shirts for my daughter! Whay hasn't anyone ever made tattoo paper you can run through your printer? Hmmmm....there's a thought! Thanks for the chance to win!
WOW - This would be a nice addition to my craft room. I print alot of pictures at those print your own kiosks and would love to be able to do it from my home (what a convenience this would be). Thanks for sharing your review.

Wow, this looks like something I could get into. I am always wanting an enlargement for a scrapbook page or project and have to sit it aside until I can order one. It would be so great just to print out a quality photo right there in my craft room.

OMG! I can't believe this! It really looks EASY and those inexpensive cartridges get my vote! Winning this would truly be FABULOUS! TFS!

This would be just the ticket for me. I just attended a class in Janesville WI using scenic photos printed on inkjet transparencies. The cards you can make these transparencies are stunning. This machine could make the pictures just as beautiful as in real life. Fun, fun, fun!!!!!!!!!

Great review! There are so many cameras and printers on the market it makes my head spin.
One very important thing I can think of to do with a printer right now, since I have never owned one, is to make copies for the family of my late mother-in-law who passed away in April. I am also working on a scrapbook for my grandparents for Christmas and some others want duplicates of them. It would be fun to use an old picture of them as a background for Christmas cards.
