Here is a little video about how to use the Slice by Making Memories... This vid shows a customer using the product for the first time... pretty small learning curve! This product retails for $150... it has some pros and cons... but it might be the perfect product for the card maker. We like that eventually you will be able to create your own designs for this product... and that MM ENCOURAGES users to utilize their own custom shapes and true type fonts.The con's... not for thicker cardstock... but it will cut Bazzill... only cuts a 4x4" max... for now!

that would be great if it let's you use your own fonts. I have tons of fonts. What about dingbats? I have some silly images.
The only thing I don't think I like about this is that you have to hold it for awhile.
This would be cool to see in person. I don't have a Cricut but it would be interesting to see the pros and cons to both. Thanks for covering it!

The Slice will start shipping Summer of 2008, likely to be in stores in July. We are taking pre-orders as are several stores and websites.
The Slice retails for $149.99 and cartridges retail for $39.99. It comes with a cartridge and a 6x6 glass cutting mat. If you'd rather have the 12x12 glass mat, they retail for only $19.99. There is no sticky mat to replace, only a spray repositionable adhesive that you use to hold the paper to the glass mat. When it loses it's stickiness, simply add more. If there's buildup of spray, wash the glass mat and start over. Very green if you ask me, much less waste!
Seeing this in person is awesome and honestly, I didn't notice the time it took to cut out the shapes. There have been a lot of comments on the time and that you have to stay there. But, all of the demo videos I've seen cut out larger, more intricate shapes. 2 or 3" letters won't take nearly as much time. Plus, if you watch the time bar at the bottom of the video, it's usually less than 1 minute from the time they hit the start button until the cutting was done. That's not really that long.
The biggest selling point for me was the fact that you don't have to cut up your paper and feed it into the machine. I can now cut letters out of a banner for my page and I know how they are positioned unlike my Wishblade where I still guess as to where it's going to decide to start cutting.
By using the SD cards, they have said the capability will be there to download your own fonts and images. Another huge benefit!

I have a slice and I am loving it...great for craft amateurs and starters, I chose it instead of teh cricut because it is portable and the cartridges are waaay cheaper than cricut's, I can also use my coupons at my local store and get the for under $20 each (they are $39.99 regular price) I plan, in the future, on getting a cricut, when I get my own craft space at home and when I am a pro at paper crafting.
I found a flaw on my slice :( it does not cut right/true small shapes, I went to the store where I got it from and theirs didn't cut small shapes either...I have invested a lot of money on my machine and cards and tomorrow I will be calling MM to make a formal complain...my local store recommended me to call MM directly as give the store name as a witness that the slice did not cut small shapes. And it is true, it also doesn't cut cardstock as promised :( boo!
I recently got a Slice for Christmas and I love it. It is much more affordable than Cricut. The feature I like the best is the words that it cuts, they turn out perfect. The only annoying features with it is that you have to temporarily glue down the paper, which can be hard to learn the correct amount so that it sticks but isn't permanent. Also it is a pain to have to cut out each individual shape, but definitely doable. I am having a problem on small shapes like circles, they aren't perfect and don't make a true circle, other than that I love it!
I just got a new design card called spellbound ( Halloween)and I seem to be missing a whole section of designs. I called the company and I need to put in a ticket and their computer is down. Has anyone else ran into this problem? They seem to agree with me that I am missing 13 images from my card. Of coarse one of them was the one I wanted to use for a magazine project.
I would love to hear if anyone has run across this problem?

I bought a Slice from my local store. It didn't cut very good at all. I called the store, and they said that Making Memories wanted me to call them directly. I did, and I was told that "I should expect problems with new products." I wasn't impressed. They offered no solution. I ended up returning the Slice and don't plan on buying another one.
Question: So you "can" cut true type fonts on it now, or is that an option they will be adding later?? Do you know what format the current files are in on the design card? Do you currently have the machine in stock?

I bought the Slice and initially thought it was great, especially for portability and it sure beats cutting intricate pieces by hand. I took it to a crop and demo'd it for the girls and it didn't cut the shape and ruined the cardstock. I took it back to the store where I bought it and the owner said you have to make sure there is sufficient glue on the mat and to change the blade often. I find it is still not cutting well and it is ruining a lot of paper as I go through this learning curve.
I live in Australia and bought the slice on ebay - I am having LOTS of problems with the slice cutting then not cutting - I wish I had paid up and bought the cricut.
I also have had loads of problems with the Slice, it chews up paper and card and makes cuts through designs were they shouldn't be. Memory Maker's solution, adjust the blade, I have been doing this and it has now stopped cutting altogher. I contacted MM and they have said they have had some problems and there will be a replacement card in a couple of weeks. They shouldn't have released the product, it doesn't do what it is suppose to. MM also said they would not honour my warranty because I bought the Slice brand new on Ebay, even though the seller is reputable and has over 30k feedback. I saved for ages for this and it is worse than useless. I am so annoyed and disappointed.
gonna wait till they get all the bugs out and they come down in price--save myself aggravation!
I too have a Slice and am disappointed. I loved it at first - I'm a card maker - but I am so annoyed at all the fiddling it takes to get this thing to cooperate! Between charging it, constantly homing the blade, and running adjustments on the thing, I hardly ever actually use it. And even when the wind is blowing right and it will work, the shapes aren't perfect. I wish, wish, wish I had just put that money toward a Cricut. So disappointed!
I agree with all the comments, at first the slice starts off great then it starts chewing up paper then it just starts cutting where ever it wants I should've saved the bread and gotten a Cricut, thank God I only have 2 cards.
I wasted a lot of time and money on this machine. It won't hold a charge. It can't cut smaller shapes and holes. Mine has started cutting throught the middle of shapes and words, making them into two shapes instead of one. Really, save yourselves the money. This thing is a non-durable piece of junk.
I recently purchased the Slice machine and have really liked it. However, the battery does not last very long. No more than 30 minutes after having been plugged in all night. I also got some of the writing tips. I wrote one word and then it wouldn't work anymore. Is this normal, or is there something wrong with my machine?
