Reported by Melissa NorrisAfter the previous article by Lauren Meader on the ATG Gun, there were many question on how exactly you load this thing. So I have prepared a video tutorial on how to load, unload, and use your ATG Gun.
Here's some of the basic information I shared in the video:
Product: Scotch ATG Adhesive Gun and Refill
Price: Suggested retail $69.95 (ATG) and $3.95 (refill)
Weight: 13 oz.
Value: 36 yards of adhesive
Please leave us comments with any other questions you may have or tell us what you love about your ATG gun.

I have this gun but hardly use it because the tape keeps edging off the roller. It is so close to the edge vs being in the middle where I wished it were. I'll try and put down the glue on paper and by the time I'm done the paper is moving a little off the roller and it's hard to move back because of the sticky. What am I doing wrong? I thought I loaded it correctly. If you look inside the gun where the tape is do you see a space between the tape roll and the cicle it is on? Judy

Do you have the red gun or the yellow one?

wow, this video is awesome. I have an ATG and love it, but I loved seeing all the things you said about it! Keep up the great work..btw, LOVED your Sponge Bob bandaid!
I have the 700, and it's probably one of the BEST items I've ever purchased. I was using the Creative Memories tape runner (the ONLY CM product I ever used), and I loved it, but when comparing a purchase of 34 feet of adhesive to 36 YARDS of adhesive . . . no contest! I go through a lot of adhesive, and I just love my ATG 700 gun! Great video. I had to watch it just for the fun of it! You did a good job!
It is pretty pricey but it seems the low cost of the refills would be worth it!
I better put it on my list!
Have a great one!

Yes Spongebob made a cameo. I got into a bit of a fight with my craft knife the other day, and I figured ya'll would appreciate "bob bob" as my daughter calls him, than my stitches.

I LOVE MY ATG GUN. It is my precious! I just wish I knew how to paint the thing bright pink! lol.
I love this gun... I have the 700 (yellow handle) and it's amazing for big projects. The only time I still revert back to my tombow is when I have small details that I need to put together. I think it's worth the investment... :)
I love my ATG gun too...
I altered mine:

I also bought this gun (the red one) after I read the Craft Critique write-up. I do love this gun. However, I have had the same problem Judy has. My tape used to roll off the little roller. What I did was put a couple of washers under the roller to make it a bit higher. Now I don't have that problem anymore. I do however have another problem (one that has persisted since I bought the gun). When I get close to the end of the tape role (about 2/3s done), the tape gets so sticky that I can't roll it anymore without it constantly (and I mean at every roll) breaking. It does this each and every time towards the end of the roll. I've lived with it because 2/3 of a roll is still cheaper than the mono adhesiver runners. Did I get defective tape or something? Any suggestions/answers would really be wonderful. Thanks! Josephine

I will say that I haven't had my ATG gun all that long, so I've only gone through about a roll and a half of tape. But I didn't have any troubles with the one roll I went through.
As far as the tape coming off the roller. I thought I saw mine starting to scoot at one point, so I just went in and scooted it down and didn't have a problem after. The reason I asked Judy what style gun she had is the yellow gun can only hold 1/2" and 3/4" and the red can only hold 1/4". I read that you can get a special adapter for the yellow to hold 1/4".
Beyond that, since I have not had to troubleshoot any problems with mine, I would suggest contacting customer service for 3M. Everyone I've spoken with at CHA that works for them is incredibly helpful and they seem like they really stand behind their products, so contact them and see if they can help.
Hope this helps.

This is Judy again. I have the red gun. Hey Josephine, I had trouble with the tape breaking and called 3M. They said the tape was defective and the place I ordered it from (??) sent me replacements and that solved that problem. I guess the gun is just not for me...I get so frustrated with it (tape coming off the roller, too big and cumbersome) and card making is supposed to be fun & relaxing. I'm back to buying the small Memory Tape Runner and refills and am happy as a clam. Most reviews are positive so it may just be my gun and me!!
You guys are great! I am going to call 3M on Monday and see about replacing the tapes I bought. Really, at this point (since I fixed that problem with the tape rolling off), my only complaint is the tape breaking. Other than that, I love this gun!
I absolutely LOVE my ATG Gun(s) yes plural - I have 2 of them. I first bought the yellow one and used it all the time. I was originally told that the tape was acid free that I was using in it. I later learned that it wasn't. I decided then to buy a RED one and use only acid free tape in it for scrapping. This way I don't have to change rolls, the different color guns are easy to identify which one I should be using for my project.
I found that like any new tool, there is a learning curve. I was frustrated at first with this gun. I found it big & awkward to handle, couldn't work the trigger and tape projects, couldn't change the tape, etc. etc. But I stuck with it and now I wouldn't part with it. I find now that it's like a part of my hand when using it. It's so easy to use, lightweight, easy to change the rolls & the big bonus...they last FOREVER!
I scrap or craft daily & a roll usually lasts me 4 to 6 weeks. I buy it by the case to save money as it's cheaper buying in bulk. This is one tool I would highly recommend!
I've had my ATG gun nearly a year. It's the red 1/4" gun. I bought it because buying the Tombo tape runners were putting me in the poor house. It took a little time for me to get used to it because it's definitely a right handed tool and I'm left handed. I'm a little ambidextrous so I've learned to use it in my right hand. I do love it. Nothing holds my cards more securely.

i love my atg!! i've got he 714 and use it on a daily basis...my "go to" item. I LOVE IT!!!!!
I have the red gun. I also have a problem with the tape edging off the rollers. I just open it up, unwind the small roller a bit and put the loosened tape further on to the roller. I then tighten the tape roll back up and go about my business. Other than that issue I like the gun. I don't find it awkward at all. I am still on my first roll.
Just as a follow-up: I called 3M about my gun and tape. Turns out there was a very LARGE defective batch of tape and ATG guns that went out late last year. The defective guns held too much tension and that's why the tape would break 2/3 of the way through. 3M not only sent me a new gun (and told me to keep the old one), not only exchanged my old tape for new tape, but they also sent me some extra rolls of tape to compensate for what I lost on the ones that kept breaking 2/3 of the way through. 3M is an excellent company! I now LOVE LOVE LOVE my ATG gun. So smooth, no breakage, tape doesn't fall off. Sigh, so happy!
Thank you for posting this video! I was spazzing, could not figure it out!
If you received your atg 714 near the end of 2007 or the beginning of 2008, they had a bunch of defective ones. They (3M) have been great to work with people to get replacements. About 1/2 way through the roll of tape it gets very tight and ends up breaking. It had something to do with the gears. I think it was Josephine P. that said she added some washers....but it's still breaking. Sounds like you have one of the defective atg's. I would sure contact 3M if I were you! Mine work like a charm (I have the yellow, red and even a blue one!) Loved your video, btw.
oops. didn't read all the way to the end. Glad you got things worked out with 3M Josephine!
Thank you so much for this thread, I shelled out the bucks for this and HATED it due to always jamming and tape breaking. Turns out my problems are the same as Josephine's. I have emailed 3M and I hope they will take care of it for me.
I just received my gun today and waa having trouble loading it. Your video was GREAT!!!! Thank you so much!
Peggy
Thanks for the instructional video. This is my question: I have somehow managed to cause the tape backing on the take-up reel to get out-of-kilter, causing the tape reel to lock-up. It looks like the take-up reel can no longer rotate (it looks like the backing paper has extended in such a way that it is taking up at least a 1/2 inch of space). I have about 1/4 of the tape left to use. I had to be away from home about a month, and wasn't using the ATG, and I think I forgot how to use it when I got back.
Do you have any suggestions or recommendations? I have not yet attempted to remove the paper from the take-up reel - which I'm not sure I know how to do - and I can't remember where I put the instructions; so if you can refer me to that information, too, I would be most grateful.
Thanks, natalie
What is the difference between the acid free and the other tapes that work with this gun? I have the ATG 700 (yellow gun)
I just got a ATG 714 and your video is wonderful!
I loaded the tape per your instructions and so far it is working fine.
Thank you.
I just started card making and I am sure I won't use the ATG daily. Does the adhesive on the white tape dry out if it is not used daily? If so, do you keep it in a covered plastic container or how do you store it?
Thanks!
Barbara
I recently bought the ATG 700 (the yellow one-but quickly altered it to purple and teal!) and I LOVE it! It is a bit pricey up front, but I got a really good deal on ebay for mine (brand new) with free shipping, and I got an adapter and some tape-also with free shipping, so I'm SURE with what I will save on refils, it will pay for itself in no time! LOL
I have the ATG 700 and absolutely love it! It is the greatest thing since sliced bread! I also bought the adapter for the thinner glue rolls! I wouldn't trade it for anything!
OMGosh thank you! I JUST got my ATG 714 in the mail today and I looked at the instructions and totally blanked out LOL. I normally am really good at that type of thing but I was stumped. This video was a lifesaver!
Can someone tell me how you altered your gun??? do you just spray painted or what do you do?? I have 700 and I really want to alter it but don't know how to go about it.
After this article, I'm planning to get one myself! However, I know there is a 700 ATG gun and 714 ATG gun. I don't know what is the different and which one to get?
And, is it true that if I am apply this adhesive with lace on top, I can easily rub off the adhesive in all the holes that lace has? It wouldn't be nice if after the lace is glued on the scrapbook you still feel the sticky parts from the holes.
Oh and the 752 ATG gun. So many choices. 700, 714, 752. I don't know what are the differences and which one I should get?
I also thought I had a defective one cause my tension was messed up....turns out there are 3 SETTINGS FOR THE TENSION OF YOUR ATG GUN.......IF UR HAVING TROUBLE U CAN CALL THEM AND HAVE THEM WALK U THRU IT TO ADJUST UR GUN!!! Mine is working excellent now!
Based on comments, I "bit the bullet" and purchased the pink Advanced Tape Glider. It was under $30 at JoAnn's PLUS I had a 50% off!! So glad I bought it. Took just a bit to learn how to load and use. So nice to be able to make a stack of cards without having to change tape refills all the time. If I'm doing small things, I do switch to the little tape runners.
