Reported by Beth SilaikaCopic markers are all the rage in 2009. You see them on so many projects with the big wigs in the paper crafting world. I want to focus on the difference between Copic markers and water- based markers. So many people have invested a great deal of money in their water based markers which match their colored cardstock. You might be considering whether or not Copic markers are a good investment, and whether you can get the markers to match your current paper supply.
There is a HUGE difference between Copic markers and your regular water-based markers (Le Plume, Stampin' Up!, CTMH Exclusive Inks™ marker). It's hard to describe the difference between the two, because it's like comparing apples to oranges. It's like drinking lukewarm instant coffee all your life and then suddenly someone hands you a Starbucks ® Skinny Vanilla Latte. It's like you can finally taste for the first time! Copic markers are to the eyes what Starbucks® is to your taste buds!
Copic markers are alcohol-based, therefore they will not tear up your paper like water-based markers. If you have colored with water-based markers in the past, you will know that you can only color a few swipes before the paper starts to deteriorate. Suddenly your images have holes or tears in them. With Copic markers, you can color over and over again, layering colors and blending to create a smooth, line-free effect. The final results are tremendous! Alcohol inks are permanent, so they will not wash away. The same cannot be said about water-based markers.
The biggest disappointment I had with my water-based markers is the tips fraying over time. I spent a mini-fortune collecting all the markers that would coordinate with my cardstock, and sometimes within a few uses, the tips were damaged. It's even worse when your kids get into your markers!
The other nice thing about Copic markers is they are refillable. You can color to your heart's content, then refill the marker quite inexpensively. Copics are blendable with a clear blender pen too, which provides endless uses, such as creating textures. You can use the blender solution on a variety of textures (e.g. rags) and create fun textures to your colored project! Copics will also be permanent on many surfaces, such as glass, wood, fabric and paper. Water-based markers are not permanent on anything but paper (and if the paper gets wet, it will bleed).
Copic markers are acid-free once the alcohol dries. Most water-based are acid-free, but you need to check every different marker to ensure they are acid-free. The other wonderful thing about Copics is the storage. Most of your water-based markers need to be stored so that they lie horizontally. This way both ends will have an even distribution of inks to the tips. With Copic markers you can store your markers either vertically or horizontally.
I quickly stamped an image several times to create a coloring comparison between Copic markers and water-based markers. All images were stamped with Ranger Distress ink pad in Black Soot on Georgia Pacific white cardstock.
The first image (far left) is colored with a few colors of Copics, starting with the lighter red, then adding deeper red to the edges and blending over the image with the lighter red to remove the lines. The second image was colored with the darker red and blended with the Copic blender pen. It removes the color and blends the colors nicely. Blend as much as you want and the paper will not deteriorate.
(close up of the Copic colored images)The water-based marker is beautiful, but does not have any variation of color. My coloring is not wonderful because the markers have frayed at the end and they are difficult to use:
I tried using some of the water-based markers, picking up the color with my Stampin' Up! blender pen. Within seconds, the paper started to rub off and tear. I could not blend very well because the paper was deteriorating rapidly:
There are several types of Copic markers to choose from, so I hope this brief overview will give you a base for which you can determine what marker suits your needs.
The top marker is the original Copic marker (also known as Copic Square), the middle marker is the Copic Sketch marker and the bottom is the Copic Ciao marker:
As you can see from the photo, the square marker (top) has a small (fine tip) nib on one end and a broad tip on the other end. Its shape allows it to be set on your work surface and not roll! The middle marker (Sketch) is oval shaped and will also not roll off your work surface. The sketch marker offers a broad tip and a wide brush tip.
The Ciao marker is round and it will roll around on your work surface. It offers similar tips to the sketch marker (broad tip and brush). *note - did you see that middle sketch marker. That was one of my first purchases over a year ago. I have used that marker SO much - you can see how well loved it is. See how well the nib has held up?

One of the things that is great about the markers is being able to grab a color (or a few colors) just by cap color. Since you do not have to store your makers vertically, you can put them in containers in your craft area and just grab the color you want. The only thing to consider when purchasing the Ciao is that the number of the marker is not printed on the cap. If you have a little obsessive-compulsive disorder about organizing your crafting supplies and you need to have the numbers printed on the cap, I would suggest the Sketch or Copic square version!
Pros:
- acid-free
- LOTS of colors
- blends easily
- colors on multiple types of surfaces (some need additional sealants) including metal, glass, tile and fabric
- refillable
- replaceable nibs (tips)
- you can airbrush with the Copic airbrush system
- clear blending pen/solution to create textures
- easy storage
- will not ruin paper
Cons:
- initial cost is expensive, but well worth it in the long run
- bleeds through the back of the paper
- in high demand, so they can be difficult to find
My Copics Markers are clearly well-loved... how about yours?

I am so dazzled by what these copics can do! I want to start collecting and will do so when my others (matched to cs) dry up BUT don't know which one to collect...the sketch or the ciao. Which one do most stampers use? Anyone?
Thanks,
Tee RAnsone
Love this article. Good examples and explanations.
Tee, I wish I were the one to answer your question and say which one is better. I'm going with the Ciao because of the price difference. Where I live I can get the Ciao for around $3-4 and the Sketch is almost $7! That's a big difference when you want to collect a lot of them. However, there are A LOT more colors available in the Sketch line. Here's a link to their color chart that will show you that comparison. http://copicmarker.com/wp-content/themes/copicmarker/PDF/updated_334_color_chart.pdf
Thanks for a great article. I love my Copic markers in a way I can't describe, though I never colour in the "traditional" Copic method. I use them on paper gesso, mod podge, acrylic paint, microglaze (all of which let you emboss digital images.) They are a bit sticky at first--on these unusual surfaces--but the ink cures with a lovely shine. I can't believe I ever resisted the Copic movement. hehehe.
How does Copic compare to Promarker? No of colors/Price/Durability/Refillable and so on...
Thank you for a wonderful review. Very helpful and informative.

I prefer the Ciao markets because I have smaller hands that tend to cramp up. Since these initially were made for children's hands, you should try each style and see what is comfy.
Unfortunately, none of the craft shops here in town offer Copics, so I would have to buy them online (and I hate to pay shipping). The high initial cost is also a big drawback for me. I would love to try them, though!
Love your coloring... I see so many great cards that have been colored with copic's. I bought a few and would love to have more colors. And with so many tutorials to watch, its becoming alot easier to learn how to blend the colors.

I am so with you on the copic's being so different than anything you can ever imagine! I LOVE to color now that I have a few in my possesion... :D
Thanks for the Copic review.
I'm just starting to color with Copics and any help and info on how to is welcome.
I bought a few colors of the Ciao to start with but i think i'll have to get some of the square one's too because of there finner nib point's.
Does anyone know if you could replace the brush nib in a Ciao for a smaller nib?
Great detailed article on Copics, i only have a handfulof the square one and yeah I agree it's difficult to find, esp from where I am...
Would love to get my hands on the Copics giveaway... thanks for a chance to win :)
I have been eyeing of copics for a while but as say they are very hard to come by. thank you so much for a fantastic comparison and article
Thanks for sharing about Copic Markers with examples of how to go about it. Hmm... got me tempted to get some soon to try them out :)
I have copic sketch and totally love them! Collecting a few at a time but the more I have, the more fun to blend and get depth of color.
yes finally got someone explain in details...i'm using copic ciao and copic sketch...but in doubt whether it will ruin my stamp image later on...becoz of the alcohol based...now it's clear to me..it will become acid free...
and love the blending part when using copic..now airbrush is in my wishlist..
Wow! I would love to work with copics. For my part I think they're just a bit too pricey...
I absolutely love my copic markers and use them all the time. I have mainly cio because of the price point but there are also fewer colours available in this one. I only pick sketch when looking for that certain colour I just need. For Cheri I also can only purchase online. If you watch you can get free shipping from many vendors with a minimum purchase. I live in Canada and was able to find it here. I have seen the same in many forums in the US. Just google it. Hope this helps.
I have a few Copic markers. I hope to add to my collecton!
I use the Sketch markers. When I started using these about 5 years ago, the Ciao weren't being made. I enjoyed your article.
I love Copics! I have some Ciaos and think they are the best markers ever. Thanks for the chance to win.
I have used other alcohol markers previously but have never used Copics... great article to show the differences though! Thanks for the chance to win!
I love copic markers. So pick me!! LOL, LOL!
I really love the colors of copic's and every body is using them, I dont own any but Really wanting to take the plung.
lots of good info.
I've been interested in trying these markers for a long time. I think I should just go for it and pick a few up. Thanks for the review.
I have a few of the Copics, but haven't done much with them - basically because I've not taken the time to learn about them. I love all of these posts about how to use them, their differences, etc. Thank you!!
Oh my goodness what a plethora of valuable information! I had avoided these like the plague. Now I see I have GOT to start investing in one a month (or two or three?)!!
These are awesome. I'd never seen such great information all in one place regarding copic markers. Thank you!
I don't have any copic markers but love the articles and would love to try them. I do a lot of acrylic painting and journaling and would love to try Copics to enhance my drawings and journalings. Thanks!@

I love the analogy about Starbucks! These sound great - I've actually never heard of Copics but now I have to have them!!
Great descriptions and information. It seems I am going to have to jump on the copic band wagon!!
I currently use PrismaColor markers and I love them, but I think I could do more with Copics!
I love my Copics and use them on nearly every card I make now! I use my old markers that match my c/s for writing on the inside of my cards. :)

This is such an awesome post! It's chock full of information! Thanks so much for taking the time to explaint Copics to us! :D I am just starting to use them and I am so excited about it!
I'd really like to try these so thanx for the opportunity to win a set.
I have 3 Copics. Two skin tones and the blender pen. I've never used them. They are expensive and I feel like I need more colors before I can really use them. Stupid, I know. I just have to bite the bullet and do it. Would love to win some though. Thanks for the chance.
Awesome giveaway, I am just learning how to use my copics and love the article, thanks!
I REALLY want some of these markers esp. for skin. I think I may go with the Sketch and just get a few at a time. So, I would love to start my set off with a prize. Thanks for the chance.
I have been wanting to try this and after these articles on Copic markers I think I have added a new addiction to my list.
Thank you for the great articles.
I thinks copic markers are the best I really love it! thanks for the giveaway!!!!!
I would be thrilled to win these pens!
I already have a pretty big investment in Prismacolor markers, but you've piqued my curiosity about the Copics, too. T'would be lovely to be a random winner, otherwise, I'm going to have to do some damage at Pearl.
Thanks for the creative inspiration!
Wow, I never knew the difference between the 3 copics.
Thanks for explaining about the different type of copic markers. I have been looking at investing in these so which one do most of the average crafters use?
Thank you for the chance to win! I love the markers and spica pens! I will be taking a Copic class on Thursday!
Great review!
Very informative atricle, I learned a lot, keep up the good work and hope I win, I love glitter. jman4@comcast.net
I don't have a preference yet, as I have not purchased any yet. I love the review of the markers. It is so good to know what the pros and cons are and kinda what to expect.
Thanks!!
I'm loving these copic posts!! Thanks so much!!
I love the look of these makers! Great articles and wonderful information. Thanks for the giveaway.
I love my Copic markers and all the different "textures" you can get with them. The article on blending and blotting them was so informative, thanks.
These are not even sold where I live. Thank you for these reviews, because I am hesitant to pay so much for a marker unseen.
i'm curious...how is "copic" pronounced? thank you
Thank you for the informative article on why I love these pens and for the chart download so as I get colors I can add them. I have never seen these sparkle pens so I would love to try them. Thanks agin.
I've been wanting some of these for SO long. Thanks for the information and reviews!
Thanks for all the info on the Copics. It's helping me a lot!
Great articles. I only have a few (well more than a few, but still not enough), so I haven't played with them very much. I guess I need to concentrate on collecting some more.
I've avoided even trying Copics until now. Do I really 'need' another set of markers? After reading these articles...YES! Off to the LSS...
I surely want to buy some Copics - just don't know which to buy first!
eugeniakraft@gmail.com
Thanks for the article. I love my Copics although I need some help using them to blend. The articles you have created will help me use the markers better
Thank you so much for the great intro to Copic markers. I've been on the fence on whether or not to buy them. I think I'm going to take a class and go from there!
LOVE, love, love Copic markers!! Thanks for all the tips and examples.
I've both Ciao and Sketch and prefer the Sketch because of the shape of the barrel (won't roll off my work table), and the wide variety of colors available.
TFS!
Thanks for the detailed article on Copic markers. It really helps!
I just started playing with some copic sketch markers, love them so far...I want to master the technique as I have seen fabulous coloring with them! Thanks for the review!
I am sad that I spent all the money I have on the matching CTMH colors! SHould've held out a couple years!
Thanks for the great review. I have mostly Ciao's just because I wasn't informed enough about the others when I bought my first set... plus tese were the cheaper ones... if I could start again, I would go with the Sketch... TFS!
I love the look of these markers...however the price is out of my budget, so thanks for the opportunity to enter to win a set!
cheers, Rhonda thisgal@bigpond.com
these look AWESOME!!! Can't find them in my LSS- would love to win some!!!
when i have time.... i will try thoses.. the bright colours are great
Thank you for your amazing review and demonstrations. I am ready to make the leap. But I too can't make my mind up on which style is best.
These Copic markers sound awesome. I would love, love, love to try them in my cardmaking!
I have had the Sketch markers for a few month and love them to pieces! I was able to get them at a local art store for a bit less money and am going to tryout the airbrush soon!
Thanks for all the insight, the pictures really help explain the differences.
Wow! Thanks for the detailed overview of the markers. I'm better informed now on the difference among the three types of copics.
How nice to finally feel I have the "scoop" on these markers I've heard so much about - thank you!
Bev M
Love how you can blend alcohol markers and not ruin paper! I was using water based and every time I tried to use a blender pen all I got was a hole in my paper! :(
I will still use my water based markers for coloring my rubber stamps but that is all.
Honestly I wouldn't know what to do with my Copics. Great article. They're definitely worth the initial investment. :)
I have the sketch and the ciao..I like the sketch better just cuZ they fit in my hand better..thanks for all the info.. this is really greaT stuff!!
I have been buying the sketch markers one at a time at HL when I have a coupon. That is taking way too long. When I sit down to color, I find that you really DO need four different shades of cool gray. A friend got me hooked and I love them. I feel like a kid again with some artist thrown in there! Thank you for answering some of my questions on the Copics!
I'm only just starting my Copic collection and I love my pens so far! I would love to be the lucky winner!
I am a copic junkie. Love em. I haven't used the spica pens yet. Thanks for all the info, ms.cheryl
Great article, Beth, thanks! I like the comparison data and pics that you've included. I now have 30 Copics and have a goal to buy 5 per month for the next couple of years. I know it'll take me a while to collect what I need for shading etc., but at least it's a start. Your article has inspired me to keep on track - it'll be worth it!
Thanks for explaining the difference between the various types of Copics. For those who are looking to purchase some, Papertrey Ink (purveyors of gorgeous clear stamps and matching ribbons/buttons, papers, cardstock -- no, I don't work for them, just think their stuff is lovely) sells "trios" of Copics. So, if you were going to order from PTI anyway, you can toss a few Copics into your basket. :-)
Thank you for explaining the differences in Copics and Stampin'up markers. I don't own any Copics, but after your comparison, I'd love to try them.
Kate
Wow! I really want to try these markers! I think I would try the Copic original ones - as I like those nib shapes the best.
love your blog and all the info on the copics and i have been wanting to try the glitter pens
This article was most informative for me since I've never known the facts about Copics....other than the hefty price tag. Now you've really perked my curiosity about trying them! Thanks for all the great info and comparisons!
Thank you for the examples and explanations. One of the best I've read so far!
It's amazing how many things these markers can do and yet work all together for even more techniques.
Thanks for this basic article! Can you letter with a brush tip?! See some calligraphy on my blog. Tomorrow (the 19th) is my birthday, I would love to win a set!
Wow, thanks for all the great info and comparisons, I definitely have to get some of these!
Thanks so much for the information! I didn't realize there was such a difference between the different kinds of markers! I am definitely more interested in these now!
I do love my Copics and was so
excited about all the Copic reviews!!
Thank you so much!!
ohh i'd love to win that ! =)
Thank you for the information! I've been on the fence about investing in new markers, but they sound worth it. Off to read more...

Love my Copics. One thing to keep in mind about the Ciao and Sketch. They have the exact same ink and nips (tips), just a different shape and amount of ink; therefor the difference in price. You can even air brush with a ciao if you put a little dimensional tape in the air brush pen holder. Also your pen will not roll off the table if you leave a cap on one end at all times. (I usually don't have both ends uncovered at the same time.) So even though I like my color numbers at the end, I like to buy more colors.
