Reported by Kandi Phillips
EcoGreen Crafts was started after founder Julia Andrus defeated a rare and aggressive cancer. Julia was hit with the reality that a major contributing factor to the wellness of an individual is his or her environment. After seeing a craft room emptied of her favorite, but toxic products, Julia knew that her background in organic chemistry combined with her passion for crafting could fill this void in her life. With co-founder Susan Sepaniak, Julia set out to create a product that was in every way possible, non-toxic for crafters. Many craft supplies are advertised as being “safe” because of low toxicity levels, but even in small doses can be dangerous to the every-day crafter or child.

EcoGreen Crafts has a full range of products including acrylic paints, board books, pigment inks, and even stamps. When designing their line, EcoGreen focused on certain criteria that each product had to meet.

Those factors include:
  • being completely harmless to the crafter
  • being ergonomic
  • possessing low or no volatile organic compounds (VOCs)*
  • being as recycled as possible
*VOCs are volatile organic compounds that can vaporize and enter the earth’s atmosphere.

The product packaging is made from recycled materials, and although plain in appearance, stays true to their green criteria. The stamps are made from 100% recycled rubber, and are cling stamps so do not require hardwood mounts. The specialized Green Glue is plant-based, and completely non-toxic with no VOCs.

I was fortunate enough to find I’m in the same area as EcoGreen’s headquarters, and was able to meet with Julia to learn more about their amazing company.

Julia Andrus and Kandi Phillips at EcoGreen office

Julia’s story is so very touching (she had me in tears!), and made me realize how important it is to remove even just one element in my own craft room that could be causing myself, or my children, harm. For me, that element would be acrylic paints. Regular acrylic paint has been represented for years as “safe” because it is water-based, but as the paint dries it releases formaldehyde and ammonia which can cause respiratory irritation and allergies. EcoGreen’s acrylic paint is developed without those added chemicals, solvents, or harmful odors.

Besides being completely safe to work with, you’ll find the pigment of this paint is outstanding. What that means for you, is that you don’t need to use a lot of paint to cover an area. The tubes have an ergonomic tip, and are also designed so you get .5 oz more of paint. I also love the bright line of colors and the fun names! Pistachio, Waterfall, or Butternut anyone? As Julia states in the video below, the colors were inspired by French history and fashion, and are equally rich and striking.

A new found love I have is to add paints on my scrapbook pages. I love how well this paint covered my cardstock and patterned paper. It allowed me to create a bold background as well as providing a surface for journaling.

Julia demonstrated two techniques with these paints while I visited their studio. She explains the buffing process that is unique to their paints, and shows a resist technique for a gorgeous weathered look.

Julia also showed the Embellishing Flourishes stamp set which is designed to coordinate with Glass Glintz.

Here is the completed ATC, isn’t it lovely? The colors are so juicy; it reminds me of a ripe watermelon!

If you love this innovative stamp design and coordinating Glass Glintz, EcoGreen Crafts is currently offering two special promotions which include the Glintz and Embellishing Flourishes!

Another fantastic product I was delighted to use is the Board Book. The books are made from recycled paper, and have built in page spacers for those bulkier pages you might create. I created a mini book that I know my family will love, and is also eco-friendly. Each page features products right from the EcoGreen store including the paints, Glintz, and even the Paris Trunk Dye Inks. I applied the pink and taffeta inks directly to the page to create a soft, but vibrant background.

I did overstuff my book a little bit, but as you can see in the picture below it closes nicely, and the spacers are designed to perfectly accommodate Glintz embellishments.

EcoGreen Crafts has truly achieved something remarkable by creating a full line of eco-friendly products, and in only 9 months. From conception to product development, testing and manufacturing, and finally the debut at Winter CHA, EcoGreen Crafts was entirely driven by motivation to bring these products to crafters.

I asked Julia what she hoped other crafters would do on their own to become more conscious or eco-friendly in their crafting. In addition to taking precautions like opening the windows and wearing gloves and a mask while using materials with possibly toxic products, Julia advises to take the product you use the most, and if its not completely safe and harmless, replace it.

Pros:
  • Safe and non-toxic products
  • Eco-friendly recycled materials and packaging
  • No or low VOCs in paints and glue
  • 50 designer colors in paints
  • 24 luxurious colors in both pigment and dye inks
  • Wide variety of products to satisfy several crafting needs

Cons:
  • New company so products are not in large chain craft stores at this time
  • Metallic paints require certain compounds, so will have low VOCs

Have you made changes to your craft environment or products? Have you tried EcoGreen Crafts paints? Leave a comment and let us know!

We use a lot of recycled things in our crafts. Old toilet paper rolls become kazoos, plastic bottles become piggy banks, egg cartons become nests, etc.. we also save scraps of wrapping paper, construction paper or tissue paper for mosaics.

I try to recycle when I can ... and I hoard all tiny scraps of paper. I often use the negative part of my die cuts for stencils, masks, etc. I have seen these paints before but wasn't sure how the colors would be. WOW is all I can say! Glad you featured them!

Elaine A said...

I have started recycling packages and using them in my art work. I use the cardboard pieces for making chipboard elements or mini books. The acetate gets used in my die cut machine or in embossing folders to use as embellishments. I reuse glass and plastic containers for storing supplies. I have also started reading the labels on my art supplies before purchasing them. I've developed asthma in the last 2 years and I find that I have to be careful with things I use. Certain smells can set of an asthma attack or irriate my throat.
I am so glad that Julia has come up with these wonderful products. She is an amazing woman, always upbeat even when she was not feeling well.

I try to recycle anything I can, but I never thought of my supplies as being toxic..tfs and I look forward to checking out this company.

When crafting I generally go by if it's acid free or says it's safe I trust this-now I'll read the labels a little more carefully-I don't know of anyone locally that has your product but I'd love to try it! This area is so consious of the environment I know it would do well and I love the colors they pop!

Kimberly S. said...

I use all the paper scraps i can, and what I can't we shred and take to the recycle center.

Mary F said...

I love the colors and the concept-I don't think anyone in my area sells this yet-but I'd love to try it. It never occured to me that my supplies may be toxic (I have a whole drawer of acrylic paints) When they say it's acid safe or for Scrapbooking I assume that means it's safe for use-thanks for the education.

Kristine said...

I simply LOVE the idea of "Safe" supplies! These products, especially the paints look awesome and I can't wait to try. In terms of being eco-friendly myself, I try really really hard to use up all of my paper scraps to make cards and/or altered art. When I find that I've accumulated too much (and this does happen occasionally), I box them up and send them to school with my kids. Art supplies are in short supply in our district and the teacher's (and students) are always grateful to get their hands on my cast-offs. Thanks for such a great review and to EcoGreen Crafts for creating such wonderful products!

I just recently got back into using my acrylic paints after a few years, and am finding many of them dried up and needing to be replaced. This is an absolutely fabulous company, and I think I will be getting paints from them.

I love trying to incorporate products in my crafting that aren't intended for that purpose like packaging that embellishments come in or stamp boxes being re-purposed. I think there is really a movement towards this kind of crafting, and it is great to see a new company embrace the environment this way.

I'm so sorry to hear that Julia was ill and so relieved to hear that she's regained her health!

When I first became interested in papercrafting, her book, "Paper Transformed," was the first book I purchased and experimenting with the techniques she expertly demonstrated kept me busy for many, many hours. My work is better because of her!

I'll be looking for her products in the stores near me and in the meantime, winning the sampling of her products would be great. Thank you!

I would love to try out some of their products. :) Right now, I recycle a lot of packaging into crafts - - cereal boxes, juice boxes, coffee cans, etc.

Did you know that the sound goes out on the first video after about 30ish seconds? I went to Youtube to try it there too and it doesn't work there either. Others commented on it not working as well so I know it's not just messing up for me. Just thought you'd like to know. Would love to see the rest of that technique. Looks awesome!

I keep all my scraps & try to use them later on in my projects. I recycle all sorts of wrapping papers & ribbons from presents to re-use it in my scrapbooking/card making. I collect empty boxes and cans/jars that I know I can re-purpose as well. I'm a recycling machine! :)

I am so glad to have found this site! Personally, I utilize many recycled items in my crafts & scrapbook pages - corrugated E-flute (from boxes) as board books, soda tabs as ribbon anchors, ribbon/cord handles from gift bags, everything! Reuse Recycle Reduce! Good luck to your new company and YOU! I'm a big fan!

It seems like a small thing, but I am very meticulous about making sure my scraps go in the recycling bin!

I love to recycle empty containers and use them in my scrap room for all my embellishments. After reading this article I went and check all my paints and got rid of them! Can't wait to be able to purchase these new paints. Will we be able to find them in our LSS or only in big chain stores like Michaels?

That paint sounds amazing!
When doing a layout or card I always try to think of ways to use the packaging that my embellishments came in.

Like many others here, I try to recycle everything; a lot of that I use in my card making and collage work.

Even in quilting, I use old paper towel rolls to wind binding around to use as I stitch it on.

I reuse packaging to make gift boxes. Also I try to use all the scraps of card stock and designer paper. I recycle old game pieces on crafts and buttons too. I think this is a great idea and am glad to see someone has come out with safer acrylic paints. Also that they can be used in scrapbooks is awesome.

I love the idea of having paints that are not toxic. Hadn't really thought about it before but I will now. I am a huge recycler and use what is around me instead of buying new stuff. I recycle everything. Thanks for a chance to win these.

I've used lots of packaging over again to make new things. I've used pretty tissue boxes as card stock in my projects. I try to only purchase items that I can use the entire thing. Paper I use every inch that I can for scrapbooking and my daughter uses scraps for her art projects as well. What can't be used is definitely recycled. I also share, trade and giveaway items that I can't use. I tend to over purchase for projects, so when I am done, I share them with fellow scrapbookers which saves them money as well! Thank you for making a green product line! I can't wait to see it in stores--my 5 year old and I will definitely be customers of yours! :)

This is amazing! I used to be an Art Teacher and frequently suffered from "sick building syndrome" from spending all day in a room full of "safe" art supplies. This is awesome and I'm heading to ecogreencrafts.com right now!

Well, I know this isn't much, but I save every little bit of scrap paper that I create from big projects. You never know when you can make something cute from left over paper, and it saves a tree in the process.

Never thought about some of my supplies being toxic especially when the paints say non-toxic on them. This was eye-opening. Good luck and hope to see and be able to find these products. Love the names and thank you for the opportunity to win.

I try and recycle papers, containers, and my buddies and I share supplies whenever we can so that one of us can find a use for something.

I'm a big recycler and love finding new uses for "throw-aways". In the past I've avoided products that were labeled with a caution but didn't think too much about all the others. Now, I look forward to trying these products, being safer and more aware.

This is one sweet EcoGreen giveaway. I would love to try these products. I love to alter containers, use tissue paper and sometimes have so many things that I have save I have to figure out something to make with it. That way I have room to hoard more goodies. Thanks for a chance.

I too used TONS of recycled items in my crafts. Greeting cards are cut up and used as embellishments - the excess rubber from stamps is cut up and used as dimensionals. And don't get me started on paper - out of date road maps are SUPER - antique them and use them as backgrounds in your travel scrapbooks!

I reuse and recycle as much as I can of my craft supplies and home products. My favorite is to use crystal light tubs to mix paints and the plastic container to make banks, brush holders and pencil cups. Put a little aquarium gravel in the bottom and they make small vases to decorate for crops.
Can't wait to try the new Eco paints! How exciting and thanks for the chance to win! :-)

I always thought my products were safe. Thank you for the eduction. I hope these products are more widely available soon. I save all the little bits and pieces that I come across such as junk mail, packaging, items in nature, left over bits from other crafts I do. I hope these products show up in Canada. My health isn't great and I never thought of investigating my craft room. Food for thought.

i store my embellishments in rescued jars, bottles and salt and pepper shakers. i also recycle paper bits - if there are some left! i used paper board or chip board from packaging - especially what is left at the back of a legal pad. i know that there are many craft things that are toxic, but i don't know what to look for. i guess "voc's" are one. i suppose if one is told to use a product in a well-ventilated room, that would be one key! i will be looking for these products in the future, but in the interest of going green, i won't purchase new products until i run out of the old (except paper!).

I have bought no VOC paints before, they were part of a set. I liked it because a part of everything was green....but I never stopped to think that the acrylics I've been using for years are toxic!!!! scary thought! I will definitely check out these products...especially the glue!
Thanks so much for bringing this to our attention!!! :)

I try to recycle as much as I can and use packaging, cereal boxes, tissue rolls and boxes, gee, so much that my hubby just rolls his eyes. He appreciates the recycling part, just not the keeping part, lol. I also try to use stuff I already have and find a new use instead of buying something else right away. I use aluminum cans in my die cutting machine, jars, cans, almost anything can be made into something fabulous. I love the idea of safe paints, etc, so I will be looking for those in the future.

I've taken a look at the things that I use every single day and incorporated all of the associated waste into my crafting. I drink tea and take allergy medication several times per day. Both of these products are individually wrapped, so I've turned the tea wrappers into an interesting background paneling for journals (the tea leaves go in the compost pile!), and the allergy pills come in a nice shiny silver wrapping that makes a great addition to mixed media pieces. I've always recycled garbage into craft projects (boxes into ATC backings, etc), but I really feel like I've taken a new step by looking at these smaller pieces of daily waste.

To think of all the years of painting ceramics with acrylic paints and sticking the brush end of my paintbrush in my mouth to keep it moist, instead of repeated rinsing while using the same color! I do so many crafts with my 7 year old daughter--we love repurposing items and snazzying them up with inks, paints, embellies (she's painting right now as I type), to think that the products we use could be harmful made me stop and think--I am very interested in these products & will check them out on-line. Hopefully my local stores will stock them soon!

Scrappy Rat said...

I don't use any animal products in my crafting. Animal agriculture...even in the best of situations...is a huge waste of water. This not only includes water the animals drink but also the enormous amount of water necessary to water crops for the animals to eat--a huge waste of land that could be wilderness as well. If we used plant products instead, we could save space, water, and so much more.

Most animal agriculture pollutes the environment via excrement, emissions, and because animal feed is grown using harsher fertilizers and poisons than are allowed to be used on human food, dumps incredible amounts of toxic pesticides into the environment. Leather, for example, is terrible for the soil, since tanning is such a toxic process. The soil around tanneries tests extremely high for arsenic, which can't be good for wildlife. And fur...the cruelty is just the tip of the iceberg. Fur traps kill indescriminately, trapping endangered species, pets, and other "non-target" animals as well as the animals they are intended to catch. It's tragic.
I could go on, but that's plenty. :) Thanks for the giveaway!

One thing I have been doing is buying less (hard to do, but I try). I've also been reusing packaging, even using the mesh packaging from my lemons on an art project. I save scraps and try to use every bit of them so there is less waste. I also look for items that use less packaging or packaging that I can reuse.

Wonderful article! I love finding out about new eco friendly resources!

I'm a big recycler and many of my crafts are made from recycled items.

As a quilter, I also use the scraps that other quilters throw away. I've got lots of people sharing theirs with me now, so they keep me in fabric and I keep the fabric out of the landfill!

I re-use anything I can. Ribbon from gifts, tags from packaging, even egg containers (great for holding paint!)

I'd really love to try EcoGreen's acrylic paints, I have a 4 year-old daughter who loves to paint, and I really like the idea of a non-toxic choice.
