I’ve never really used anything like this before, so I was really excited to get my hands on this machine. Up until now, I was only familiar with the Xyron sticker maker and hand-held adhesive applicator tool. Xyron has put together the ultimate machine, Creatopia: a non-electric adhesive and laminating machine which also cuts, embosses and die-cuts. It's pretty hefty and built like a tank; this beast is about 12 pounds! With the machine came 25 ft. of permanent adhesive. I also received 40 ft. refills (which they cutely named "Refillz") of repositionable adhesive, fabric adhesive and two-sided laminate. All are acid-free.

The cartridges are definitely bulky so you may want to reserve a spot in a cabinet for storage or use a dedicated container for storing them. And, when I'm done with the cartridge, I wonder if I can recycle them? Maybe Xyron has a recycling program?

Before I started using the Creatopia, I didn't see any of the tutorial videos Xyron posted, but I highly recommend viewing them. While the Creatopia does appear simple to use, the written directions seem sparse and slightly unclear. Usually, you look to the product overview as the “Quick Start” guide. It wasn’t as quick as I would have liked.

The text is tiny, which isn't a problem for me, but might be for others. It would have also been nice to have better visuals instead of the small 1/2” - 1” high pictorials of the machine overview, and I found it difficult to go back and forth between the descriptions and diagrams. This is coming from someone with a technical background.

As far as set-up goes, there's a Crank Handle which folds in for easier storing, and when you want to use the machine, you pull the crank handle out or down. This was easy to position. Then there's the Positioning Handle, used for adjusting the rollers for different material thicknesses (up to 1/2") and this also needs to move when you switch out different adhesives. This handle was very stiff, unlike the machine in the tutorial videos. I wasn't sure if it was because my machine was new, but it hasn't really eased up in the weeks I've been playing with it. Lastly, there's a cutting device where your material exits. It's sharp and seems pretty precise.

I really like the 12” width, which for most projects, is very good. You get great edge-to-edge coverage for large pieces of paper, fabric or whatever your crafting heart desires to laminate or put adhesive on.

I had a little difficulty getting longer pieces started, but I only had to hold it in place and help feed it into the machine while I started to rotate the crank.

As you can see, I placed pieces together and ran them through to maximize the adhesive coverage.

Let's talk about the fun stuff: laminate and adhesives!

Repositionable adhesive is so great for school projects, cards and stickers. Naturally, I tried it with cardstock for some cards, but my daughter's school project was a perfect example. She wanted to stick a hand-drawn label onto a pen. It worked out beautifully, and three weeks later, I removed the paper with no residue on the pen.

The laminate is two-sided and clear. The instructions say to run it through a little to get the wrinkles out.

I thought I rolled enough out, but this is what happened with my first run. I tried to laminate a newspaper article:

Wrinkles!

One thing to consider is to run the machine with something of little consequence, like junk mail.

No wrinkles after the news clipping and junk mail. I cranked out a coffee holder that I want to use as a fabric pattern.

Laminating is great for bookmarks... the cutter went through the laminate and paper.

Beware of the pressure on the cutting edge... this was not enough. Sort of torn up.

This one is all nice and neat.

It's great for business cards, too.

How about kid art-turned-placemat?

Okay, while the idea was good, maybe not with the 3-D foamies. Notice the puckering and wrinkling? The pieces went through the machine fantastically, but this was one of those late night crafting ideas and I didn't expect a lot of wrinkling. However, if you want to make the foamies into stickers, this machine will do it for you, no problem!

My favorite part of the Creatopia is the fabric adhesive. I love it. Here's a quick video of fabric getting fed through the machine.

video

It's super handy to make scraps usable again, for instance, for cards!

The pieces of fabric in the video turned into strips and heart embellishments for my apron.

Probably obvious, it's easy to peel if you have a backing edge (top picture), tricky if you don’t (bottom picture).

The adhesive is super thin and sticky! I recommend the “pick off the corner first” technique and removing it slowly, per the instructions. Peel a small part of the backing away, and then lay your fabric on the surface. Pull the backing off as the fabric adheres to the surface.

With a larger cut of fabric, I wasn't successful with peeling the backing off completely before adhering to the surface. Notice the untidy attempt (above) versus the neater try (below). And, be forewarned, wrinkles on the surface will translate through to the fabric.

I turned a dollar store shoe organizer into a stuffed animal "apartment building" for my daughter. I didn't have to decorate it, but it seemed like another great late night idea.

In all cases, when I cut through the paper or fabric, I didn't get residue on my scissors or blade edges. The fabric adhesive claims it will not leave residue on needles either. Instructions for the fabric adhesive does not state if heat setting is needed. I suppose we can assume it doesn't.

Overall Xyron has not let me down yet. I'm looking forward to trying this machine with the embossing, cutting and die-cut capabilities.

Pros:
  • Well made and does not use electric
  • Great edge-to-edge coverage (12" width)
  • Can laminate at home
  • Interchangeable parts (refills) are easy to replace
  • Manufacturer videos available
Cons:
  • Bulky cartridges
  • Directions are not all that clear
  • Cartridge storage solution needed
  • Wish the adhesives came with a little more description
  • Not sure if refill cartridges are recyclable
MSRP:
$149.99, adhesive and laminate refills $39.99

I have more ideas for embossing papers. I love anything that makes paper more textured. I would love to use the laminators for my veggie cut outs for my garden.

I see several craft projects with sticky backed canvas which require decorating the canvas. With this, I can make any patterned fabric sticky, I get to choose what fabric I want to use!!

Thanks for the information, I was very curious on how this machine and how all the cartridges interchanged. Love the concept.

This machine looks great. The possibilities with fabric are endless!

I'm just itching to put some fabric through one of these bad boys. I'm not sure what all I would make, but I know I would be inspired!

I do so many crafts, I could use it endlessly. I do love the 12 x 12 embossing! I love xyron products!!

My DD tends to be hard on books...I have considered making her a couple different books on a couple different occassions to help her to learn to talk, people she knows, also to learn colors with the Sesame Street characters. I have avoided it up until now because as I said...she's hard on books, I would love the laminating function for this purpose.
I love Xyron (I too have the X sticker maker) Would love to work with the bigger size!

I have a ton of ideas for embossed cards and scrapbook layouts, or canvas bags for my bridesmaids...oh the possibilities are endless!

OH---I have wanted one of these for awhile! I laminate all my notebook covers (since I am constantly writing notes to self)!! Thanks for review--always good to see what others think:) THANKS for the chance to win!

Lots of crafty ideas come to mind when using this machine. An easy fabric adhesive for using fabric on my cards and altered art projects is one of the first things I would try. Love the larger size- so many more possibilities. Would love to own one of these.

Deluxx said...

So many possibilities. I'm not a great seamstress so I think the fabric adhesive would be brilliant for me -- keep everything where it belongs! And I would love to laminate bookmarks and some of my other paper work. I can see making fun "backstage passes" cards. I have the teeny xyron sticker maker and use it often, but I often wish I had something bigger for larger pieces of paper. Certainly making paper backgrounds on ATCs, notebooks, and scrapbooks would be easy with this one!

Tina said...

The ideas are running over!! But with three children in three diff. schools - Book covers here we come!!! The projects are endless!! Sign me up please!!

I've seen this advertised but this is the first review. Thanks. I would like to do some fabric adhesive. I have some beautiful fabric that I'd like to use but not quite sure. With that I could make it sticky and much more flexible.

Flag banners are evident everywhere....and they really can add a party atmosphere..but after all that work to make them, having some laminate to preserve the pieces would be really welcome. I think this machine is really handy.

I love Xyron products. I have the mini sticker machine and the one that is like only about 4 inches wide. Which isn't all that helpful when I need something wider to apply adhesive to.

I love the idea that you can place paper and fabic up to 12 inches wide through this machine. I have never seen one in action or in person so this article was very helpful.

This product would open more doors for me in my crafting. Just being able to apply dry adhesive with a backing on something larger than 4 inches.....the possibilities are endless.

I love the idea of being able to laminate scrapbook pages for the kids. My son always wanted his "own" book but when he was little even page protectors couldn't keep him from adding his own "details" to the pages. This would certainly solve THAT problem! Plus can you imagine having class instructions laminated and using those as place markers, etc.? Me likee! LOL!

I would love to use this for my appliquing. I wonder how permanent the fabric glue is and how washable it is? Great review!

I would love to use this to create memory pillowcases or placemats with my smaller family members--as quilts are a little daunting for the under 8 crowd. I can see having them cut arranging fabric on a plain canvas background for the pillowcases or sticking pictures of their adventures with each other and laminating them into water/spill resistant placemats or carry bags for their trip home

I've wanted this machine since I first heard about it. I'm especially excited about the cutting options: I teach and spend a lot of time cutting cardstock into specific sizes. The Creatopia would save me a lot of time.

I have been wanting to see this in action and can't wait to see more in this series. I have the Xyron 5" sticker maker and love it. Love the versatility of the Creatopia, although the space requirements for storage are a concern.

One of the things I love to do is make quilted cards, but its difficult to sew the little pieces down without them being stuck on the base, but it really gums up the needle and, consequently, the bobbin thread. Would love to see how the fabric adhesive sews!

I love xyron products! I have several and can think of many ideas that would be easier with the creatopia. One of my favorite things to do is to feed fabric through my different sized xyrons to cover journals.

Wow-does this look like fun or what? love the idea of laminating important papers for projects ... and laminating fabric for all kinds of stuff (bookmarks, placemats). love the idea of this machine!

I have used Xyron products for years and love the smaller ones. I recently sold my 850 and replaced it with a Purple Cows laminator - which I dearly love!
I used a Creatopia for a weekend (borrowed from a friend) and noticed first that Xyron has not solved the wrinkle problems. In earlier machines, they told you to fold a piece of heavy paper and run it through first. Unfortunately, the "fix" was temporary. With the cost of refills, it can add up. Honestly, I did not try to embossing but did like the fabric gluing.
Be prepared to find a LARGE storage area!
My advice is to decide if you really need all the features. If you're looking for a laminator, there are much better ones available.

I would love to use this with the Bigz XL dies, and I´m a big fan of glue! I only have the tiny X sticker maker, and all though I love it, it would be great to be able to put glue on the back of hole 12x12 sheets!

i am a newbie exploring the world of mixed media. i don't have much space, so having one machine that does it all would be great. i like to cut and emboss shapes to place over and under other layers. the tool i have now is so limited in size of media it takes that i get frustrated trying to do larger projects. this machine would be great for bigger projects... and all the other ideas that pop into my head once i started using it.

This machine looks like it can do it all.
