Reported by Jenny Barnett RohrsWhen I first heard about the Xyron Creatopia at CHA last year, I was really intrigued. A machine that could apply adhesive, die cut, and rotary cut? Wow. And then I was offered the chance to review the Creatopia and try it out for myself.
I'm going to preface the rest of my review by saying that I'm approaching my evaluation of the Xyron Creatopia as a quilter/fabric artist- there will be other reviewers who approach the machine as paper crafters.
So let me first tell you what it does really well. Xyron is known for it's adhesive and lamination, and as far as the Creatopia is concerned, it continues to do that flawlessly. I tried the fabric adhesive on cottons, batiks, felts, and foams, and the machine applied a wonderful adhesive easily.
After prepping additional fabrics, I thought I'd try swapping out the cartridge for the die-cut insert known as the Xyron "Shapez." This ingenious little insert allows you to take out both the adhesive cartridge and the rollers, and drop in a manual die-cutting machine! The cuts has a span of 6 1/2 inches wide and will accept all dies- even Sizzex Bigz!
Now, I'm going to pause a moment and tell you that the first time I had to take out the rollers I did not have an easy time. The instructions are vague, and I struggled with the Positioning Arm trying to get it unlocked and moved into the right position. I kept worrying that I was going to break it. But then I found this handy-dandy video on YouTube, (Bless you, Xyron people!) and I felt more confident after watching it.
So once I got the Shapez installed, I really went to town trying out ALL of my dies! It cut like butter using the Cuttlebug dies, Sizzix dies, and Bigz dies.
Now, again, I ran into one annoying part of the Creatopia- the crank handle, which flips up, occasionally did so while I was trying to die-cut. Usually this happened when I was having to man-handle the machine while running a big chunky die through the Xyron. Another thing to note is the sheer weight of the Shapez insert- it easily weighs 7-9 pounds- so if you have problems lifting, this may be a challenge for you. These factors aren't enough to make me avoid using the Shapez insert, but it IS something to be aware of.
I had such a fun time with the fabric-backed die cut shapes that I had to sit down at my sewing machine immediately and applique the snapsuit I mentioned above, as well as this fabric postcard!
Don't hate me, but I'm going to be honest about this...I really didn't like it at all.
The first reason I have for this conclusion was installing it. It was difficult to get installed into the Creatopia base, and geez-oh-petes it's HEAVY. Like 10 pounds heavy. I could quit my gym and just lift this instead! And while I was impressed by the amazing array of cutting wheels (like rotary cutters in a plastic cartridge), getting them to snap onto the rails was also challenging. Even after watching the video, I still had problems getting the tab to "snap" and securely lock into the rails.
Finally, when I got it set up and cutting paper, I tried sliding though quilters' cotton. No go. It cut only intermittently. Next I fused some freezer paper to the backside of some cotton and tried again:
Now, as a fabric artist, I often used Pellon or Peltex, as a stabilizer for fabric postcards, and it cut that very well:
All in all, it's a great tool for a fabric artist. The fabric adhesive is awesome, and the ability to swap out inserts and use it as a die cutter will tickle most quilters. It DOES have a huge footprint, so you need a bit of room. But if you've never had a Xyron before and want to take the plunge, this is the one to have.
Pros:
- Base unit is reasonable (about $150)
- Ability to have 3 machines in one is fabulous for the cross-over multi-crafter.
- YouTube videos really help the learning curve with installing the components.
- Adhesives are wonderful.
- Shapez big enough to accommodate all dies.
- Large footprint (14" x 22")
- Written directions aren't great.
- Shapes and Cutz components are heavy.
- Everything is BIG- the cartridges, etc, and you need storage for it all.
- Handle can flip up while cranking.
$149.99, adhesive and laminate refills $39.99, Cutz insert $44.99, Cutz cartridges $14.99

My sister makes fabric post cards - I could make all kinds of goodies with my die cuts for her to use on her projects.
WOW! That really sounds like close to the perfect machine...wonderful for appliqueing kids' (read: 7 yr old daughter's) clothes with homemade designs. I would be interested in seeing how well it cut felt/felted fabric. Sounds very tempting!
It sounds FABULOUS that your scissors didn't gum up at all! That onsie is too cute! I would love to do some applique on clothes for my DD!
I've been adding more & more fabric elements to my cards lately :) I think this would help a lot! Thanks for this giveaway :)

I would love adding more fabric elements to my cards and scrapbook layouts! This would be great to have!!! Also adding appliques to home decor stuff!!! Thanks for the chance to win it!
So glad it works with die-cutting. I'd like to cut up a bunch of sticky-backed flowers, enough to make a huge bouquet for display!!
This is what I urgently need!
Awesome, I have always loves Xyron products. I just was thinking about making the grandkids some placemats and this would work wonderfully. I could cut, layer, laminate...woohoo. My mind is a whirl thinking about designs.

I have this idea of using drop cloths for making curtains in my craft room. I thought maybe putting appliqued flowers or something on them to spruce them up with a pom-pom border. A Creatopia would definitely help me there! Great giveaway!

i am a newbie exploring the world of mixed media. i don't have much space, so having one machine that does it all would be great. making cutouts of lots of media in bigger sizes than manual die cutters allow would be fantastic. i like to hand-cut shapes to cover with adhesive and stick on projects. i also like to try combinations of embossing patterns on single pieces. could see this machine expanding my horizons.
I would use it mostly for paper, but I did just recently get a sewing machine. So, the sky's the limit.
I LOVE ALL THINGS XYRON!! hope i win this beauty :)

I'd love to decorate some adorable shirts for my kiddos! :D
I can see it now!! Charm bracelets made from fabric cut outs!! And so much more!
I would love this machine just to make simple die cuts of paper, but i am sure all the other features would lead me to many new crafts!
I had one of the original big Xyron machines way back and I loved it for all the things that, that one did. Would love to use this...
Love this. Wish the carts were smaller, but hey, the machine is great!
Amazing machine! I really like that it does up to 12" edge-to-edge adhesive!
afghanlady57--This machine is awesome. Would love to try it. It would add such a new dimension to my quilting and scrapbooking.
maybe the thicker, non-woven peltex is easier to have the machine cut, versus thin, and therefore more movable, cotton. perhaps, one could adhere the fabric to the peltex first?
I want to make some cool fabric cards
I want to try the Shapez feature, I can''t believe it that it takes so many die cuts that is awesome!
I have always liked Xyron products and use several. I like the many things the Creatopia machine can do, and after this review and watching You Tube videos about it, I have to have one!
Kate abbbc
wow sounds like a lot of work, and you have to buy each design separate, and then it wouldn't cut the fabric, like it says it would? enough to give one pause, especially at this price.
Susan
No doubt about it, I have to have this machine. Love everything it does.
Ok. I know you posted this ages ago, but I had to add a HUGE thank-you for such an excellent review. I'm not a paper-crafter, but I do a ton of work with fabric...and would love to be able to cut other materials to make toys and decorations for my toddler daughter. I've had the hardest time finding good reviews of machines that address my questions as both a fabric person and a shopper brand new to the world of die-cutting and the like. I was just about to throw in the towel and either buy nothing or invest in something I wasn't sure about. You just saved me a TON of time and money, and I'm so appreciative. Will be following you from now on! :)
