Trend Spotting Report – April 2011

Reported by Simone Collins

Each month I spy and spot the latest trends in fashion, design, and pop culture which often determine the hottest trends in craft. This is your monthly Trend Spotting report of the hottest trends spotted online.

Upcycled and Recycled Crafts
Earth Day is less than a week away, but it’s no secret that upcycled and recycled crafts are popular year-round. With companies like Delta Creative and Eco Green Crafts making earth-friendly craft products, it’s apparent that crafters want a planet-friendly way to craft. So gather up those old books, sweaters, and tin cans to create some of these great projects:

1. Crafting 365 – Day 117, 2. Upcycled notebook , 3. Cuff Bracelet, 4. Recycled tin can, 5. Recycled glass jar candle!, 6. Recycled Newspaper Advent Calendar, 7. Recycled Paper Beads, 8. Candy wrapper pouch, 9. flirty flowers

Exercise and Fitness
Bikini and swim trunk season is right around the corner, so getting in shape is on everyone’s mind. It’s no surprise that every week I see fat-free foods and work-out clothes in all my sales flyers. This trend translates to the crafting community in crocheted water bottle holders, handmade yoga mats, and healthy little clay fruits:

1. Melbear, the fitness Panda, 2. Water bottle cozy., 3. Healthy Fruits, 4. Heart Health , 5. 6 Anti-Diet Bottle Cap Magnets, 6. Morning Glory Yoga mat bag, 7. Live Well Pendant, 8. Don’t Diet Live It T-shirt, 9. yoga mat and bag plushie

Checkered Patterns
Gingham and checkered patterns are everywhere these days, from fashion to home decor. Crafting is no exception, with Melissa FrancisOctober Afternoon, and Graphic 45 making checkered patterned papers and embellishments. Take a look at these great projects featuring this popular style, including soaps, Blythe doll clothing, and cool fabric button earrings:

1. Gingham Daisy Pin, 2. Knit Pouch for your Pens, 3. Checker Soap Chunks, 4. Checkered Black and White Pendant, 5. Fabric Covered Earrings, 6. Checkered pink tote, 7. Blythe Stuff Colorful Checkers Dress, 8. Panda Bag, 9. Pepito the Little Horse

These are just a few of the current trends. Are you using any of these trends in your latest projects? What are your favorite current trends? We’d love to know.

And if you are one of the great crafters who have a project featured in this article, feel free to share this with your friends on your blogs and websites with this handy dandy logo. Keep up that amazing work, we love sharing it!

i have used a seersucker gingham plaid for a bag i made. i have always hated seersucker, but someone passed it on to me. at the same time, they offered scottie dogs. i saw the possibilities. since i was making bags anyway, i put the two together. here is the result: http://rush8888.blogspot.com/2011/04/did-you-know-that-i-sew.html
