Vendor Spotlight & GIVEAWAY: Silhouette SD

Reported by Jessica Ripley

Of all the craft products that are on the market today, it seems to me the most difficult one to reach a decision on when it comes to what to purchase is a die cutting machine. Not only does there seem to be a version of every shape and size from capability to budget, choosing a die cutting machine is not really a “this one is the best” type of purchase. When reviewing all that is out there, we also have to take into account our personal feelings and needs, because in truth all those machines are “good,” it is just a matter of which one is “best” for us.

We are faced with questions such as:

  • Do we want excellent portability, or will the machine stay in one place on our craft rooms never to move?
  • Do we want the capability to cut our own designs or are we okay with strictly pre-made ones?
  • How computer-savvy do we need to be to use the thing?
  • At what point does the price (and future costs associated with) no longer equal a good investment?

I have asked myself all of these questions before, and that led me to originally choose a different die cutting machine for my needs. I won’t be comparing the two in this article, as again which machine we prefer can be just as much of a personal choice as anything, however I do feel like I should mention testing out and playing with the Silhouette SD has probably changed my mind on which machine I would recommend to a friend if they were faced with those same questions above. Here’s the lowdown that I’d share with them, which I hope you find helpful in your pursuit of the perfect machine for you too.

What you get

Out of the box the Silhouette SD comes complete with just about everything to get you up and running.

  • The Silhouette SD machine, which is lightweight and not overly bulky (a must for precious craft space).
  • An electrical cord and USB cord for computer connection.
  • 2 cutting mats (one for thick media, one for thin media).
  • 3 blade caps (you replace a cap on the blade for different cuts when it comes to the Silhouette SD rather than the blade itself, which I did like).
  • 1 installation CD (complete with 50 preloaded designs) and 1 detailed tutorial CD (Software for Windows XP/Vista/7 and Mac OS X 10.5.8 and higher).
  • A basic manual.
  • $10 download card for the Silhouette Online Store.

What else you need (or might need)

  • A computer, Mac or PC.
  • A longer USB cord. I found the cord which came with the machine too short for my particular set up, however an existing (much longer) cord from another machine I had on hand worked great.
  • Material to cut of course (paper from your stash, or anything from Silhouette’s line of other materials including heat transfers, temporary tattoo paper, vinyl, etc).
  • Basic computer skills.
  • An SD card to make the most of the Silhouette SD’s capability (it seems to me like they could have tossed one in the box, but most of us probably have one on hand).
  • Patience and time for the learning curve.

Set up

Initial set up of the Silhouette SD was quick and easy. The software installed on my Windows 7 PC in minutes (though do make sure all Windows updates have been applied to your computer first, as this did add to the total time for install on my end).

As far as physical space, the machine does not take up a lot of room. You do need space in front and behind it for the material to move while being cut. The machine cuts 8 1/2″ x 12″ size or smaller using a mat.

The technical side (software and online)

The paper manual which comes in the box is enough to get you up and cutting quickly, however the array of tools and options in the software does require you take some time to watch the tutorial CD and learn the basics. The tutorials are very well put together and easy to understand, especially if you are a visual learner like I am.

I liked the look of the software; it is slightly customizable in appearance (color and button size), and pretty easy to navigate. Here’s an image of the basic desktop you start off with for each new design.

I especially appreciated that hovering with the pointer over a particular tool brought up its name until I got the hang of what they all were. If you are familiar with photo editing or drawing programs, the software will seem very intuitive to you. If not, the tutorials (which are very specific) will give you a great handle on it quickly.

You are able to cut just about any design (pre-made, your own, or a traced scan) with the Silhouette SD. All True Type fonts installed on your computer can be cut, which opens up the flood gates for font possibilities in projects.

As mentioned above, the Silhouette SD software comes pre-loaded with 50 extremely usable designs:

Right at your finger tips is also a link to the online store with thousands of options to choose from (most are 99 cents each, though subscription programs are available which reduce the cost greatly), including designs from well-known companies like Hero Arts and Donna Downey. I quickly spent the $10 download card that comes with the machine while looking at all the great options!

Of course, possibilities are endless when you take into account designing your own images as well. Here’s a simple project made by creating my own design using standards fonts (Impact and Lucida Handwriting). The weld tool makes easy work of combining letters.

My design in the software:

And the finished project:

Performance

Though I only had opportunity to test the Silhouette SD on regular cardstock and paper for this review, it worked absolutely great. The machine is noisy when cutting, but does the job. I appreciate the 2 different cutting mats for different thicknesses of media, between which the only difference is the amount of adhesive (the lesser amount of adhesive meant for thinner materials).

As far as actual cutting, the Silhouette SD has more than just one option too. It also perforates. I love this option which makes super quick work of folded projects such as this pillow box (this template comes with the software).

Other features

The Silhouette has a Print and Cut feature which for me was the tipping point on why I’d now lean towards recommending this machine to a friend. I am a very big fan of cutting elements out of patterned paper for projects, and this option is quick, easy, and works great.

As an example, these 3D flowers were available in the online store.

First I printed them with the necessary registration marks so the Silhouette knows where to cut (this is covered in the tutorials) and then simply loaded into the machine for cutting. Here’s a peek of the Silhouette SD in action with the lid raised.

And the result:

Here’s a card using the finished flowers (which would have been about $2.99 in a pre-made pack).

The card template and sentiment also come preloaded with the software, and the dress form is from the online store.

To make the Print and Cut feature even more appealing, the software also includes a trace tool for tracing scanned images you wish to cut out. The trace tool takes a little getting used to, but once I practiced a bit I was able to make a near perfect replica of this vintage doily in a few easy steps. First I scanned the doily into Photoshop Elements and saved the image as a bitmap, then opened the bitmap image in Silhouette SD Studio and followed the steps to trace it, and finally proceeded just like I would with a print and cut image:

Finally, the Silhouette SD has portability thanks to the SD card slot located on the machine.

Designs are able to be loaded onto an SD card and then retrieved by the machine for cutting while not connected to a computer.

To sum up, let’s revisit those primary questions above when purchasing a die cutting machine.

  • Do we want excellent portability or will the machine stay in one place on our craft rooms never to move?

You don’t have to necessarily choose with the Silhouette SD. Thanks to the SD card slot, you are able to pre-load designs to be cut onto an SD card (not included), unplug the machine from your computer, and take it with you to a crop or anywhere else. You must, of course, take the time to load up the SD card with images first, however if you do so with ones you use often that can become very handy. I myself don’t crop out of the home much, but traveling from my craft area (where my husband is playing a loud video game) to the dining room table (where I don’t have to hear “watch your back!” every few minutes) is a nice option.

  • Do we want the capability to cut our own designs or are we OK with strictly pre-made ones?

Again no choice necessary here. Countless designs are available online, many great ones come with the machine preloaded in the software, and designing our own is a piece of cake once you get the hang of the software. And, no need to buy many designs we don’t care for either just to get a few that we do.

  • How computer savvy do we need to be to use the thing?

Basics are definitely needed, and knowledge of working with other drawing type programs would put you that much further ahead of the learning curve, however the tutorials are very good at explaining each and every tool. So there should not be any intimidation about the computer needs as long as you are willing to take the time to learn.

  • And of course at what point does the price (and future costs associated with) no longer equal a good investment?

There is certainly more freedom in how we can answer this question with the Silhouette SD versus other machines currently on the market. For one, designs can be purchased separately for 99 cents, however if you become good at it you can also design your own for free (or download the weekly freebies from the online store to build your collection also). If you find you are constantly wanting to use new images, you can choose one of the subscription plans available which roll over from month to month if you do not use them up. Also there is no third party software to purchase in order to increase the capability of the machine, it simply comes with the flexibility we wish they all had.

Pros:

  • The Silhouette SD can cut just about any image, increasing its value potential over other machines.
  • The software and online store are user friendly and fairly easy to navigate after a bit of learning time.
  • Many options are available from cutting style (straight line or perforated), cutting mat (thin or thicker media), to material which can be cut (Silhouette also offers vinyl, heat transfer material, flocked paper, and even temporary tattoo paper).

Cons:

  • Initial purchase price of around $200 is expensive and may not fit your budget, no matter what the possibilities for use could be.
  • The Silhouette cuts a smaller size overall than other die cutting machines (8 1/2″ x 12″ vs 12″ x 12″ or larger), and if you have large 12″ x 12″ stash you will be trimming a lot before cutting is possible.
  • Like other machines, eventually the blade and mats will need to be replaced which will be an added cost.

I would love to own this machine but there is no way I could convince my husband that I also ‘need’ this, as you said, no matter how many great projects I could make. I won’t be purchasing, based on cost alone, a girl can dream of owning it!

  2. Christen Smith June 28, 2011 at 7:23 am #

Oh wow, I would LOVE to have the Silhouette! So many possibilities! I like quirky, sarcastic things and I’m just not that excited about a lot of the dies available, so the ability to create my own would really be worth the price.

  3. Kimmy June 28, 2011 at 7:26 am #

To me, this is like scrapbooking on steroids! I’m one of those people who collect quotes, and I’d love to have this machine to cut vinyl for me–I’d cover every wall in the house with them! I’ve read lots of reviews, as well as casual mentions on blogs, and I really like that you can customize images. I might buy a doily pattern but have my machine only do the outer edges, for example. The only real “downside” for this machine seems to be that it can’t use the 12×12 scrapbook paper, but I don’t have a huge stash of that anyway, so it’d be easy to switch to 8.5″ paper. However, the very large pricetag (for any of these types of machines) is too high for me to seriously consider buying one. I’m hoping to be lucky 🙂

Wow, what a great giveaway! I don’t own any digital cutting machines, just a manual die cutter, a Sizzix.

The thought of the complete flexibility and versatility is what sells me on one of these machines.

If money were no object I would definitely get the Silhouette over any other digi cutter. This is based on a review/comparison that I’ve read.

Thanks for the chance to win!

I am obsessed with my Silhouette SD!! I absolutely love it and most of the cards I have made lately feature the Silhouette. I am amazed at its versatility and the more I use it the more I learn and the more I love it! I have lots of examples of its versatility on my blog. As I have said recently “If I was stranded on a deserted island and could only take one tool I am praying for electricity because I am taking my silhouette”!

    Thanks for the great chance.

It would be life changing for me to have this machine, hahaha… There’s so much possibilities using It compared to other machines

I would love to own a Silhouette! I’ve been looking into it since there are some things I’m not happy about with my current die cutting machine. Thanks for the chance to win one.

  12. Funky Finds June 28, 2011 at 8:42 am #

I have been wanting a Silhouette for months! I think it’s the best machine for my needs as I work on an iMac. From what I’ve learned through online research, Silhouette offers a download on their site to allow Mac users to easily use the machine. Other machines require you to purchase additional software that’s at least $60. I would SOOOO love to win this giveaway! Fingers crossed 🙂

  14. Moi June 28, 2011 at 8:58 am #

I do not own the Silhouette, but it is my dream purchase! I’d love to cute welded titles out of patterned paper, or have every butterfly imaginable at my disposal without needing a punch for each. *crosses fingers and toes to win*

  15. Lillian Child June 28, 2011 at 9:11 am #

First of all, thank you for this fabulous review as I had no idea how the Silhouette compared to other diecutting systems on the market. My crafting dollars are precious and few, so to know ahead of time what I am investing in is a HUGE factor. I do not have a diecut system yet, and have been sitting on the fence until I was sure I had all the facts and the best machine/technology was available.

  16. kkrewtea June 28, 2011 at 9:12 am #

I have been saving for this machine for a LONG time! I would love to win it!!!! Thanks for the chance!!!

  17. catnap June 28, 2011 at 9:14 am #

I don’t own a Silhouette, or any other cutting machine. Naturally, I’ve been yearning for one, though it’s a big investment. I really appreciate this thorough review because I’ve been wondering how the different machines compare. I’m really impressed by the DIY aspect of this particular machine – the ability to make your own designs. That, for me, would be the main selling point, as well as the cost savings of buying only the designs I want as opposed to buying multiple bundles with many designs I may never use. Thanks for the thoughtful review. (Also loved the image of crafters being warned to watch their back as they work, lol! There’s a Portandia episode in there somewhere.)

  18. Sue D June 28, 2011 at 9:26 am #

I do not own one but am intrigued with its versatility and would love to try it. Thanks for the great review.

  19. Lindy June 28, 2011 at 9:47 am #

I would love to own a Silhouette; but try convincing my hubby of that. It would be great to have on hand. Thanks for the chance!

  20. Annette June 28, 2011 at 10:00 am #

Wow this the first time I have seen it demonstrated. I really like it. This would be really cool to win. Thanks for the chance.

  21. Jingle June 28, 2011 at 10:01 am #

I don’t own one, but I’ve been keeping my eye on them. I like how easy the Cricut is to use (which I currently have) and I don’t use a computer with it at the moment much, but I like the flexibility and added functionality of the Silhouette.

  22. jjocarlson June 28, 2011 at 10:04 am #

I do not own a Silhouette! Until today after watching the tutorial I wasn’t sure of what it did! Now thanks to your tutorial I really would love one! With that being said my husband and I need to have a talk lol cuz I really want one.

  23. Anita June 28, 2011 at 10:06 am #

I don’t own a die cutting machine and would love own. This article was very helpful in deciding which one.

  24. rlynnbaker June 28, 2011 at 10:08 am #

I would totally buy this machine if I had the money but alas *sigh*…I haven’t heard as much about other cutters but I love the ability to create my own designs. I would use it mostly for making stencils for fabric.

  25. Bunny June 28, 2011 at 10:09 am #

I don’t own a Silhouette but love it’s smaller size. I have a larger machine but since I have limited space it’s always such a chore to get it out ans et it up.

  26. LaceTopDesigns June 28, 2011 at 10:36 am #

I own one and I absolutely love it! The software is SO easy to use, even for a complete beginner. As a card maker, I love it to make up my own unusual card base shapes.
My only bug with the Sillhouette is that it does not cut chipboard and I find it struggles to cut through Bazzill cardstock too. (have to repeat cut it 2 or 3 times).

I also own a Slice Elite, which I do use alot, but mainly because I dont have to set anything up and no computer is involved.

  27. Jamie June 28, 2011 at 10:38 am #

I have wanted this machine for awhile now! My husband has the first silhouette and I have a cricut. In my opinion you get much more detailed cuts with the silhouette verses the cricut.

  28. Peg June 28, 2011 at 10:54 am #

This is my leading contender for an electronic cutting. I like the ability to weld the letters, the availability of all the fonts and the capability to cut other media like vinyl. I keep trying to win it but one of these days it’s coming to live with me! Thanks for the chance to win!

  29. Amy June 28, 2011 at 10:55 am #

Wow- I would love to have a Silhouette! I currently have a cricut, but now that I cannot use scal (computer crashed & I lost it) I would love to have a more versitle cutter, but just can’t spend the $$. Thanks for the chance to win!

I do not own a Silhouette, but have wanted one for a long time. I love that it can cut fabric.

  34. Anonymous June 28, 2011 at 11:06 am #

I have had my Silhouette SD for 18 mos. & just love it. It’s an extremely versatile machine & the designs are wonderful. I even created a garden plan using the “print lines” option & then ran off several copies on the printer. I hope that Silhouette America will create a machine that can cut 12 x 12 paper – then it would be just about perfect.

I have been thinking a lot about getting one of these. But I use a Linux OS, so it would take some serious negotiating with my husband to get me set up to be able to use the software. If they just had a way to do it in a browser instead.

  37. KimberlyO June 28, 2011 at 11:09 am #

I’d love to win a Silhouette. I currently have a Cricut (or two) but I’d like to own a machine that I can use MTC or SCAL2 with, without feeling like a criminal. 🙂 This machine looks great!!

  38. Suzie Button June 28, 2011 at 11:11 am #

I don’t own this machine yet, I do have a Slice and a HotShot, but I believe this machine has so many more applications than my machines, as it can do tattoos and larger and more precise details. Susan purrpage3 at verizon dot net

I have been researching these the last few weeks and this is the one I REALLY want! It seems to be user friendly and something I could totally see myself using for crafts around the house, my kiddos are in sports so coaches gifts would be a breeze! And of course Christmas, I love, love, love to give home made gifts and this would be the most perfect tool!!!

  40. Sarah June 28, 2011 at 11:17 am #

I own one and love it! Love that I can purchase individual shapes and not cartridges. I also love that they have frequent discounts for subscriptions to the online store which makes shapes even cheaper! I have used it to make so many things, t-shirts, cards, stencils for my quiet book. My mom loves it too and I would love to win it for her!

  41. Kasi June 28, 2011 at 11:18 am #

I don’t own a Silhouette yet but I hope to do so very soon. I currently own a different brand cutter which doesn’t cut as precisely as the Silhouette does and is the reason I am going to eventually own a Silhouette. There’s times when I need extremely small cuts or intricate cuts but my machine doesn’t have the capability to do so. This machine will definitely be an upgrade to what I currently own.

I’ve heard awesome things about the Silhouette can only can only dream of owning one. Would be over joyed winning one, Congrats to who ever wins. Great Giveaway!!!

  72. simplydesigning.blogspot.com June 28, 2011 at 12:11 pm #

I do not own a Silhouette, but yes I would LOVE to own one!

I have used another to-remain-nameless-machine and I felt like it was trying to format a brochure on a type writer: very long and tedious indeed! I also felt so limited using the other machine.

But the little I know about the Silhouette, I am in love! And so intrigued by all my options! I love the ability to buy just the shapes you want/need. I love that you can use your own fonts. Plus I love that I could design my own things to cut!!!

I don’t even own one of these but I am in love with it!! I sure hope I win!

I made a large (for me) investment in another machine which promised being able to cut your own computer fonts and images in the future. Instead, they’ve created a whole new machine. Won’t invest in another.

Anyway, the beauty of the Silhouette is cutting my own fonts. I may only use a font one time so this is a great option!

  76. Alicia Bliss June 28, 2011 at 12:25 pm #

I don’t own any machines yet but I would love for this to be my first. I love the freedom of this machine! It truely is wonderful!

While I don’t own a Silhouette this review maks me wish I did. My crafting dollars are limited but when I do scrape enough together I think this machine would fit my crafting style & space best. Is there a plan to eventually make one that handles 12 x 12?
Thank you for the super review & the chance to give a Silhouette a good home.

Ok, first of all, thank you for the well explained usage of the SD. I had many questions myself and you answered them very clearly and concise. This is one major reason why I love Craft Critique. You explain things very easily. Two, I have the Expression and I love it. However, there are times where I wish I could create my own designs and cut. I do like having my cartridges for those frequently used images and knowing I can just plug in my cartridge to cut it out. I can see having both machines in your supply room if need be. It just depends on each individuals preference. If you don’t mind having to use your computer to make cuts that’s is fine or just popping a preloaded cartridge is fine too. Each piece of equipment we buy rather it’s a die punch or a die cutting machine you are making an investment. No one piece of equipment will do ALL that we would like. If you want a square cut you purchase a square cut but then you want a circle so you have to buy a circle die. It is always in investment from die cuts to paper to adhesives. The more choices we have the more creativity we can have. The possibilities are endless!

For me, I think the possibilities of creativity with the Silhouette SD are endless. The use of SVG images and True Fonts gives WAY more flexibility than other cutting machines out there.

I just purchased a Cricut — I had waited a long time to make a thoughtful purchase. I obviously did not do enough research, and then after I had already purchased the Cricut, I found out abut the Silhouette. I was so disappointed in my Cricut. The possibility of winning a WONDERFUL machine, such as the Silhouette, would be AWESOME!

  100. studiono8 June 28, 2011 at 1:20 pm #

I would love to have it is better than Cricuit machine. My neighbour lets me use her and I am so jealous!

  101. Nani G. June 28, 2011 at 1:24 pm #

I too own a Cricut but I’m bummed that I didn’t do enough research prior to purchasing my machine. Would luv the chance to have one but can’t convince hubby that i need to invest in another one. 🙁

  106. Ronile June 28, 2011 at 1:29 pm #

  108. Sherry'sPaperie June 28, 2011 at 1:38 pm #

I would choose a Silhouette because of the ability to create my own die cut pieces. There are just so many items that the currently available dies can not do.

I own a Cricut and an older version of the Silhouette. They each have their good qualities as you said in your review. I’d like to know what is different in the SD. The older version is quite noisy. In fact it was quoted as to be as noisy as a camel having sex LOL

Unfortunately, I don’t have a Silhouette. In reading all it can do, it sounds like I really missed the boat. Would love to win one! I am mostly a card maker, but do a little scrapbooking and this sounds like a DREAM machine!

funny this post should appear this week since I was just comparing die cutting machines. Silhouette went to the top of my wish list because I can design my own cuts. For that reason I would prefer to purchase Silhouette over other machines. I also love the SD card function an the perforated cut. I could make so much good stuff. Great giveaway!

  119. LMM June 28, 2011 at 2:00 pm #

I own another brand of cutting machine – sad to say! I wish the Silhoette had been available when I bought my very limited xxx! There would have been NO contest – I would have chosen Silhoette in a heartbeat! Love the flexibility! Would use for cards, vinyl, and, I’m sure, many other projects! Thanks for offering the chance to win….

  120. rudie2shoes June 28, 2011 at 2:03 pm #

This looks really fun to use. I’ve never tried one so I’m not sure how great it’ll function. It looks more compact than the Cricut & you don’t need to buy those cutting mats constantly.

  121. Jill June 28, 2011 at 2:04 pm #

I’ve always thought this would be a better deal because of the download options–not buying a cartridge for one alphabet or a couple of fonts.

  122. Scrappy Rat June 28, 2011 at 2:06 pm #

Hmm…I have been holding off on getting an electronic die cutter since the technology evolves so quickly, but this one looks like it’s pretty ideal. I love that it prints and cuts, and it’s so cool that you can create your own designs. Wow!

What are your thoughts on how this machine can do versus other machines you know of?
I love the print and cut and I love that you can buy ready made designs.

I love the Silhouette soo.. much I blog about it. Became a fan and started a Silhouette users forum. I’m pround to say we have over 700 members who share ideas, tips, and tutorials on using the Silhouette. I would love to win one to give to my sister for her classroom. I can’t think of any gift that would help a pre-school teacher more.

It is so nice to see a critque from my favorite “get to know” craft products Craft Critique. you all are doing an anamzing job!thanks Craft Critique fro bringing the Silhouette SD to light.

Oh, I would love to win. I have the original Cricvut from when it first came out. NO longer want to buy all the cartridges, when I only may use 1 or two images. I like the idea of only buying what you need, or the option of getting freebies.

  141. Terry Oulboub June 28, 2011 at 2:49 pm #

I just heard about the Silhouette from someone asking about cutting digi’s. So I goggled it and found there’s a machine that free hand cuts through software. I was sold on it immediately. The more I read about it, the more I longed for it since I sell digi’s and use them in my products all of the time. I always cut them! After reading more here on the machine, I can see how it would put my Cricut to the side were I to own one of these babies. Bye, bye Big Shot and so long Cricut! I would totally be in craft heaven if I won this machine!

  142. Sheri June 28, 2011 at 2:54 pm #

This would be a wonderful win for me. I have not bought one as I have a Cricut and never use it. I have a friend who has a Silhouette and loves it. Unfortunately she is in another country so I can’t play with hers. I don’t have a clue how to tweet and don’t have a Facebook account so this is the only place I can enter but I can hope, right? Thanks for the dream.

  143. Michele June 28, 2011 at 3:02 pm #

The one I’ve been waiting for! I have debated for years over which machine to get, bought a couple of the biggies and returned them always disappointed! I did buy a Splice , used it a few times, bought some design cards and left it on the shelf again disappointed with the results.
I love the multi aspects of this machine. My design neurons are firing with ideas. I would have to hold a garage sale to put it in my budget but if I collected up all the poor performance tools, die cutters and punches I have I might be able to come close
Even better would be winning this contest and donating my gear to a worthy neighborhood art center! Thanks for the chance to enter. I really hope I can eventually own one and congrats on creating a product that fits the needs of us crafty gals!

  144. Ayelet June 28, 2011 at 3:05 pm #

OMG! I’ve been dreaming about the Silhouette for ages, I’d love to win.
I don’t own one, it’s too pricey for me, but I like the Silhouette other than other die cutting machine for its ability to cut anything including stuff you design on your own.
Thanks for the chance to win!

  145. Melody (lacyquilter) June 28, 2011 at 3:10 pm #

I would love to own this, but would not consider purchasing it on my limited budget. This one seems more versatile than the machines which require so many different cartridges.

  146. Patchi June 28, 2011 at 3:13 pm #

This machine seems like a great investment, and the options ion the store seem very reasonably priced compared to other brands. Food for thought….

  147. funkycrafter June 28, 2011 at 3:16 pm #

i don’t own a silhouette. i have been considering a machine off and on for a while, but this is the first one that has met my criteria of being able to design my own patterns directly on a mac. even before reading this review i had decided that the silhouette was the machine i would want. would be a real bonus to win one.

I do not own a Silhouette but have wanted to own one for some years now. There is something that has attracted me to this machine… I like the idea of buying individual images of what I want vs. a whole cartridge. I like that I can cut out fonts i like and images. I have loved the projects I’ve seen made with it. and I’m not one to “travel” with my machines…so it would work perfect in my home. Thanks for the opportunity to win such a fabulous machine.

I would love a sd machine. I love that you can use it with your computer or not and you have all those font possibilities.

  165. CreatedByWendy June 28, 2011 at 5:01 pm #

Do you own a Silhouette SD or are you considering purchasing one?……I don’t own one. I own another machine that is very similar but have had a difficult time getting the project from the clipboard (work area) to actually cut.

What are your thoughts on how this machine can do versus other machines you know of?…..It looks like it may be easier. I would love to compare the 2 and see which one is easier to work with. I have a great idea for a Steampunk project that would require me to cut numerous cogs. I’d like an easier way to do it than the machine I am attempting to use.

I love playing with Silhouette Studio and my cutter. I like making acards but love being able to make large graphics to stick on the wall in my kid’s room. From what I’ve heard others say, the Silhouette is the best around for Cut and Print projects.

I do not own a Silhouette, but my friend does and she has completed amazing projects with it. I love the fact that she can cut out those trendy vinyl sayings, she has done T-Shirts with the iron transfers and more. It is way beyond anything my manual diecut machine can do. I would love to win one!

In the last month, I have probably looked at online info re: the Silhouette at least six times. There is almost nothing to not like about it–unlike one other machines (Cricut) which seems to be getting bad press from some crafters right now. Silhouette cost is a major factor, but it sounds like it could be a wonderful addition in a crafter’s life.

  174. Elizabeth June 28, 2011 at 5:37 pm #

I have a little Cricut and have been thinking about the SD. The cost is what has kept me from moving forward though. I keep dreaming:) http://visionsofpaper.blogspot.com/

  175. veronica June 28, 2011 at 5:39 pm #

I began scapbooking many years ago with simple and very primative pages using stencils and buying alpha from the rotating die-cut bins at Michaels. About 5 years ago I discoveed digital scrapbooking which I enjoyed but I missed being able to have that paper in my hand, being able to touch each piece and texture of the elements. Now I am doing hybrids, which I love. As I wait for money to fall out of the sky to buy a cutting machine (lol)I have researched the different cutting machines and I know that whenever the time comes that I would be able afford to purchase one, it would be one that had the capability of using digital formats and not just the cartridges. The SILHOUETTE cutting system would fill that need perfectly. Until money begins to fall out of the sky, I will continue to use my computer and printer to print and then hand cut. I would love to have the Silhouette. I know with it I would be able to CREATE so much more because of not having to spend so much time hand cutting. Thank you for the opportunity to have a chance at winning one!

  176. Anonymous June 28, 2011 at 5:55 pm #

I would LOVE LOVE to win this, I have been looking at all the machines trying to decide on one to save for. I have Cricut but it is getting VERY pricey for all the carts/. I am thinking about selling all to get a new machine.
    Have a happy crafting day!!

I do not currently own a Silhouette, but this is the machine both my husband and I could use for our crafting. Hubby works on scratch built models and frequently needs to fabricate the components he needs. The versitilty of the SD would keep us busy for many years to come.

  178. Samantha T. June 28, 2011 at 6:04 pm #

I own a Silhouette and it is the best crafting tool I’ve ever purchased. I love that I can manipulate and see images right in front of me on the computer screen. You can nest, layer, resize, rotate to your heart’s content!

Wow, what a great giveaway. I would love to own a Silhouette, I do have a die cutting machine but it doesn’t cut detailed projects like I have seen on Silhouette videos, it looks like a very cool machine

Oh pretty please! I do programing & events for non-profits, developing curriculum for kids, teens & families. Have been struggling along with two hands (non-profit, right?) and the ‘lend me a cup of die-cutter’ from friends. If wishes come true…it’ll be a Silhouette to call my very own…so beautiful & so much more I could do!

  182. TxSizeHull June 28, 2011 at 6:39 pm #

  186. Cristin Dillard June 28, 2011 at 7:06 pm #

I really liked reading your review of the Silhouette SD cutting machine. I recently purchased a Cricut and am dissatisfied with it because it does not give me the flexibility or creativity I believe the Silhouette would.

I wish I had done my research (better) when making the decision to invest money into a cutting machine. Had I done my research, I would have definitely purchased the Silhouette!

This is such an awesome give away.

I have been reading up on all the various machines. Even considered buying the Pazzles pro machine. Most of the machines are not Mac friendly or require some special software to be downloaded, and still is not perfect. Really appreciated all the points made regarding this machine, but would still like more info on use with a Mac. Great article, BTW.

  207. Pam Hornschu June 28, 2011 at 10:09 pm #

This is my additional entry. I linked on FB to this article. I really hope that I win this machine. I think it will open up a whole world of my own creation!

I have long debated a silhouette – my ex husband had a vinyl plotter that only cut the vinyl and that was fun for making stickers that I just hand colored with alcohol inks, but I hated that it didn’t have the flexibility to do paper or other media. This would be perfect for multi-media projects.

  274. Janelle June 29, 2011 at 12:09 pm #

I would LOVE to have a Silhouette! I’ve wanted a die cut machine but have been turned off by the cartridges of designs that take up too much space and have a lot of designs I’d never use. I love that you can create your own images and use all the fonts on your computer. I hope I am lucky enough to win!

What a wonderful giveaway! I would love to own one of these. We (hubby and myself) have talked about getting one. We are on a budget and right now there are other things that come first. So we have considered purchasing one just not at the moment. I likke the silhouette better than the other machines I have seen because of the endless possiblities. I like that you don’t have to buy cartridges to get images. I can just purchase and upload or create my own. It is such a space saver. Fingers crossed! Thanks again!!!

I would love to have a Silhouette but my budget won’t allow me to purchase one. I would love to have one because I have arthritis and often have a difficult time cutting out paper items. I think I’d prefer the Silhouette than the other die cutting machines because the versatility.

I don’t own a Silhouette, I have considered one because I don’t own a craft cutter and thought this would be a great one to start out with-as all of the products are easy to use, find and fun!
    Thank you for the opportunity;)

I would LOVE to win this, I could never afford one. It’d be like getting a Cadillac when I all could afford was a paper punch! I’d love to make stencils for signs & pillows with it.

I’ve wanted one for a long time! Maybe I’ll get lucky!

i don’t have one of these machines. i am impressed by the true-type font, which would allow me to use a “supply” that i already have. also, i like that it has a method with which to trace and cut practically anything (if i understand this correctly).

  303. Brenda June 30, 2011 at 10:14 am #

I own a cutting machine now, I won’t mention which one, chirp chirp, but have considered getting a different one because I feel as though I am being forced to buy more things in order to use what I already bought. How does this make sense? I commend you for allowing everyone more than one way to use your machine once they purchase it.

I don’t own a Silhouette, but I considered it last year. Unfortunately, price was the issue. I am a card maker and I would love to be able to use the Silhouette to make cards. I was not able to view any of the offered designs, but I like the ones that come with it so I am sure I would find lots to like. I would also love to design my own! Thank you for the chance to try this great machine!

I do not own a Silhouette SD, but do consider getting one. I own a cricut, but it seems that Silhouette SD can do a better job cutting fine design and the options to cut different material is great. I love the fact that it comes with software that you can design and create. Thank you for the chance to win. I would LOVE to win Silhouette SD.

I currently have a sizzix and a TON of dies, but I think the Silhouette would be MUCH more versatile, especially with all the different designs – easier to download a design, less waste, etc. Also, would LOVE to play with the temporary Tattos!
