The variety of media available from Silhouette for using with my machine has really made me stretch my creativity. Before I got my Silhouette Portrait I did not “do” decorating clothing. Now I am really enjoying it! Iron-ons are the perfect way to jazz up basic boring kids clothes and turn them into something special. The clearance rack at Target is a great place to find good quality basics that will look fabulous with a little something extra. All of these items are from Target and I don’t think any cost more than $3.

I wanted to give this baby onesie some diva attitude, and I found just the text file to do it with from designer Lori Whitlock!

Silhouette Iron-on OnesieSupplies | Digital Cut File: Lori Whitlock for Silhouette (‘don’t hate me because I’m beautiful’ phrase). Transfer Material: Silhouette Smooth Heat Transfer Material (Dark Pink).

The dark pink heat transfer material bonded very nicely to the knit onesie. I was worried about how it would bond to the stretchy fabric but it is smooth and looks almost like it is dyed on.

Silhouette Iron-on OnesieAs adorable as the onesie turned out, there were some challenges. The smooth heat transfer is tedious to work with because of just the feature that makes it durable: its elasticity. It can be challenging to pick out the interior pieces from an intricate design like this text cut.  However, if you take on the challenge, the results are worth it as the finished product is gorgeous!

So if you are a beginner at working with iron-on, or are working with a very intricate design, I suggest working with another option available from Silhouette until you get the hang of it a bit: flocked heat transfer material. This material is thicker, and cuts are more clearly visible, making it easier to pick out the negative space. It also irons on more quickly in my experience and it is easier to tell if it is adhered or not. Even though it is thick, it stays adhered. The shirt I made with my daughter last year is one of her favorites and gets washed almost weekly. It still looks brand new!

This little white toddler t-shirt was cute with the ruffle, but it needed a pop of color to make it really something special. A simple cut file from Pebbles’ Floral Lane collection was the answer! The flower seems to grow out of the bottom hem and the flower edge echoes the shape of the ruffles somewhat.

Silhouette Iron-On Flower ShirtSupplies | Digital Cut File: Pebbles for Silhouette (flower). Transfer Material: Silhouette Flocked Heat Transfer Material (Yellow).

This last top (from Target like the two previous ones) has butterfly sleeves…so why not a butterfly design? It was a bit hard to get it centered on the gathered top, but the gathers actually give camouflage for any error I might have made, so it works out. This design is also cut from the flocked material.

Silhouette Iron-On Butterfly ShirtSupplies | Digital Cut File: Sophie Gallo for Silhouette (Hippie Butterflies). Transfer Material: Silhouette Flocked Heat Transfer Material (White).

The top had a round pom-pom trim along the neckline. When I was choosing the butterfly design from the myriad of choices in the Silhouette Online Store, I selected one with round cut-outs that mirrored the pom-poms, for a cohesive feeling in the design. They look made for each other!

Silhouette Iron-On Butterfly ShirtA tip to use when designing iron-on projects: cut your design out of plain paper first to test it on the item and see if the color, size and design style are right before you cut from the more expensive iron-on material. Then lay out the item with the practice cut and see if you like it!
