Colorations Liquid Water Color

Reported by Shannon Schafer

Forget the days of watercolor pallets…. where are the colors end up blending to brown! Colorations Liquid Water Color is a great medium to add to your little artists supply box. Colorations has taken the fun in water color painting and made it extremely versatile to use in a variety of different projects.

My first experience with Liquid watercolor was at a recreation center teaching a group of homeschool children some fall art activities. We used the liquid watercolor and eyedroppers and decorated Coffee filters that we cut into the shape of fall leaves. The kids also had a blast when we put shaving cream on paper plates, dropped some of the liquid water color into the shaving cream and swirled the colors. We then took some card stock paper and pressed it into the shaving cream. As we scraped the cream from the paper it was an instant tie dye effect. The kids were amazed. Although the product is non-toxic and washable. Too much water color on the fingers will stain for a day or so.

I love a product that gives you a variety of ideas on how it can be used and the Discount School Supply Site gives you plenty. Everything from Gelatin Giggles to Colored Spaghetti.

Pros

  • Versatile
  • Easy to use, Easy to Clean up
  • FUN… projects keep kids interested

Cons

  • Too much on the fingers will stain for about a day
  • Need to teach kids about mixing colors so they are not disappointed with a Brown project… unless of course that’s what they are aiming for. In that case let the artist create!
  • Isn’t sold with most craft supplies/ school supplies yet. Not real easy to come by.

Colorations Liquid Water Color can only be purchased online at Discount School Supply but variations of a liquid water color can be purchased online at Oriental Trading and Dick Blick Art Supply. Michaels has a great mini starter set in the kids summer crafts section. It is a part of the “Kid Concoctions” line and is a 3 pack of colors. 8oz water color bottles range in price from $2.50 – $3.50 depending on your color selctions.

Liquid Water Color is a definite for summer agenda of kids art projects. It is easy to use versatile and don’t forget to check the Discount School Supply site for some great project ideas.

I work with kids throughout the summer and school year and my staff and myself give it a rating of 10-FUN stars! The project ideas are endless and you know once you get the kids going they will come up with a whole book of new ideas!!! Have some liquid water color fun!

These looks great! I’m sure they could provide hours of fun too! It’s too bad they are not more readily available.

You can show kids that fun carnation trick with food coloring in water too. ;o)It works with celery too. The color will travel up the veins of the celery. Very cool!

Thanks for reviewing this. It’s neat to see reviews of more obscure and new items that we might not run into otherwise. I really love the cool bouquets in the activities section of the product listing. They’re really nice–not just a project for little kids. I can’t wait to give it a try!

Great idea. Also, did you know that you can buy the tempera powder in basic colors and make your own finger paint? Mix with water and add glycerin. You can mix just what you need or a whoppin jarful as long as you have a tightfitting lid.
