Trend Spotting Report – May 2011

Reported by Simone Collins
Each month I spy and spot the latest trends in fashion, design, and pop culture which often determine the hottest trends in craft. This is your monthly Trend Spotting report of the hottest trends spotted online.

All things Yellow

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know already yellow is hot, hot, hot this year. Pair it with gray and it is crazy hot! Manufacturers are taking the cue and creating fabrics, paper, yarns, and more with this bright and cheerful color. Westminster Fabrics’ Fairlyte Garden patterns, Basic Grey’s Lauderdale and Hello Luscious collections, American Crafts Hello Sunshine and Campy Trails collections, and Making Memories Dilly Dally collections all feature this popular trend.

Check out these fun projects featuring this sunny hue:

1. Argyle Fleece Throw Tutorial, 2. Elastic Waist Skirt, 3. Yellow bunny, 4. Yellow Blossoms Card, 5. Yellow Organza Mini Flowers, 6. Button Post Earrings, 7. Push phone pouch, 8. Little Hedgehog, 9. Polymer Clay Rose Beads

Bohemian and Hippie

I can’t walk into a store or browse a clothing website without seeing this popular trend. Whether you are like Old Navy and call it Mexicali or you are like Target and call it Calypso, we can all agree that this trend is currently very hot. These bohemian styles with their carefree attitudes and bright patterns are hot in crafts as well. We R Memory Keepers has a Fiesta collection that plays on these colors and patterns, as does Moda Fabrics Bandana fabrics.

Here’s a peek at some great projects that feature this Bohemian/Hippie style:

1. Mandala silkscreen shirt, 2. Bohemian rhapsody slim clutch wallet, 3. Bohemian Card, 4. Tribal Flames Glass Pendants, 5. tribal belt, 6. Bohemian Desert Necklace, 7. Handmade Crochet Headband, 8. Glass Découpage Magnets, 9. Tote bag

Bicycles
Bikes are all the rage these days, not only because the nicer weather affords us the luxury of actually riding one but also because the bicycle itself is such a cool design. Fabrics from Green Olive Textiles and Aunt June make it simple to incorporate the bike theme into your next project. Retro bike stamps from Hero Arts and Mini Bike Paper from Hambly Screen Prints can help add some cool wheels to your next paper crafting idea.

Take a look at these cool bicycle inspired crafts to get your wheels turning:

1. I like my bike !, 2. Bike Ride Yarn Wreath 01, 3. New Bike Ties!, 4. Japanese Bike Robot Tshirt, 5.Bike Basket Liner , 6. hello bike card, 7. Bicycle sprocket bowl, 8. bicycle embroidery, 9. vintage bicycle earrings

Got a great project that is inspired by one of these themes? Noticing some trends yourself that I may have missed? Please share it in the Comments section below this post on our website. We love to hear about what you’ve been crafting!

And if you are one of the great crafters who have a project featured in this article, feel free to share this with your friends on your blogs and websites with this handy dandy logo. Keep up that amazing work, we love sharing it!
